The arrest last week of Maoist Polit Buro member Kobad Ghandy has been a matter of intense media interest. The Rajasthan government has recently ordered government officials to treat elected politicians with respect. Officials have been asked to stand up to receive MPs and MLAs and talk to them with respect. At all government functions, elected representatives must get prime seating, according to the order. YSR evoked strong feelings of like and dislike, and where I stand in that divide is clear. I wish YSR had not flown that morning. He deserved to live much longer.

It was sometime in 2005 that I met him first. Not many people in Delhi media gave much attention to YSR, who had in 2004 defeated Chandrababu Naidu, darling of the media. YSR didn’t care. In fact, he was not very enthusiastic at all to make a profile in Delhi. He knew it was best avoided in Congress politics. Read more
