Which Pak city is cooler – Lahore or Karachi

While visiting Lahore and Karachi, I found both cities were being perceived as unsafe. In Karachi, friends warned that I might die in a bomb blast in Lahore. In Lahore, friends warned that my cell phone might be robbed at gunpoint in Karachi. It was funny to hear Karachiites and Lahoris being bitchy about each other. The rivalry is so intense that there are hyperactive Karachi Vs Lahore clubs on the Facebook. Initially, to my foreign eyes, both cities looked equally dry. No bars, no discos, and too many beards and hijabs.  Gradually I discovered that Lahore and Karachi are poles apart.

One is old. One is new. One blooms in the heart of green fields. One sprawls out of a sandy desert. One has Amritsar within 30 miles. One has no city within 60 miles. One is in the land of five rivers. One is in the land of one river. One has the canal. One has the sea. One has the gardens. One has the beaches. One is the citadel of culture. One is the bastion of business. One has the heritage of Mughals. One has the heritage of British. One is the fiefdom of Shariefs. One is the fiefdom of Bhuttos. One has a pleasure-house in Heera Mandi. One has a pleasure-house in Napier Road. One has the grave of legendary courtesan Anarkali. One has the grave of legendary singer Noor Jehan. One has french fries as street food. One has dahivadas as street food.

Lahore is literally literary. John Milton praised Lahore in Paradise Lost. Rudyard Kipling’s opened Kim outside its old Ajaib Ghar (the museum). Bapsi Sidhwa began Cracking India in its Jail Road. Lahore has history as rich as Delhi’s. it was the capital of Akbar – the greatest Mughal emperor. It was the capital of Ranjit Singh – the greatest Sikh ruler. Lahore is also Pakistan’s principal gourmet destination. Nihari is relished at Bhati Gate. Payas are ordered in Heera Mandi. Halwa Puri is devoured in Railway Road. Kheer is savored in Gawalamandi. Rooftop dinner is enjoyed at Cuckoo’s. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had called Lahore’s people ‘Zinda Dillan-i-Punjab’. Muhammad Ali Jinnah had called it the ‘Heart of Pakistan.’ After all, it has Minar-e-Pakistan, Pakistan’s India Gate.

But Lahore is too provincial; more Punjabi than even Delhi. Karachi is closer to Bombay and you feel its cosmopolitanism in its salty sultry air. Its people speak in English, write in Urdu, think in Baluchi and dream in Sindhi. As first capital of the Islamic republic, Karachi is known as the city of lights. It is actually the city of load shedding. Never mind. The metropolis is Pakistan’s maximum city. It has fiction writers, fashion designers, globetrotting businessmen, TV actors and glamorous socialites.

It also has Taliban terrorists, underworld dons and gun-wielding thugs. But most people in Karachi are like me and you. They go to offices. They watch films in multiplexes. They text romance-shayiris to their lovers. They take camel rides on the beach. They go crabbing on the sea. They drink Vodka, snort cocaine and hook up sex dates on the Internet. In daily wear, they wear shalwars as well as shorts.

Karachi may not match Lahore’s history but it is a city with many *firsts*. British India’s first telegraphic message was sent from here. British India’s first tramway system was set up here. British India’s first scheduled airline service was started from here. It was the place where Alexander the Great set his camps. It was the place from where Muhammad Bin Qasim led his invading army into the heart of Hindustan. It was the magnet that attracted Indian Muslim refugees with dreams of a better future. It is the magnet that attracts people from all over Pakistan with dreams of a better future.

It is really a city with two cities. Beautiful Karachi – rich, sexy, fast, pulsating and dynamic. Ugly Karachi – poor, uncouth, violent, unplanned, and dangerous. It is the worst nightmare of Pakistan. It is the best hope of Pakistan.

For me, Karachi anytime. Sorry, Lahore.

Beautiful peice of art . I am from Karachi and have seen Lahore too. I think Karachi has grown out Lahore in the recent past due to able leadership of Mustafa Kamal of MQM. Also more and more people are getting educated here compare to other parts of the country. It has seen bloodshed in last 2 decades I was growing up but thank God things have improved now. It is also the city of Great Great Great Jahangir Khan who ruled the squash world for years( The guy never lost a single match in 512 matches before finally loosing to Ros Norman of NZL in France) Karachi used to be the initial film industry of Pakistan and went on to produce great actors like late Waheed Murad . It gave birth to Javed Miandad and Shahid Afridi too.
The genius leader of the south east asia , Mr Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto ’s house is also there at 70 Clifton. Karachi also has the 2nd highest fountain in the world. Recenlty Saira Naseem who won the fastest woman ’s title in SAF games also hails from Karachi.
I have lived whole of my life there but for the last 3 years. I missed my Karachi like my love as it gave me the most beautiful days of my childhood, its streets enabled me to play cricket and its Dow Medical University gave me the Medical Degree.
Love you Karachi , You are the best and will remain for ever.

I had an opportunity to visit both Lahore & Karachi over a year ago. While it was good to be there and find people welcoming, the utter poverty, disgust and civic misrule spoke of another story. What you see is a an open mistrust against the government and its policies for everything against India. You wonder what the Hate India policies brought them really in the 60 years. You see a country where education, job creations, civic infrastucture and medical facilities still overpowered by the government’s lust to arm itself with weapons left and right. You see people wanting to be with India and be in India and being so friendly with visitors from india. I was offered free stay by over a half dozen of people I have just barely met. The guys in the government, in their flashy suits paint a rosy picture of this utterly poor and deprived country because it keeps them in power with alms from the Yankees. End of the day, the truth prevails and all lies get exposed.

Wow! A rather half-hearted attempt at being unbiased in your examination of the two cities.. Your two statements sum up the fact that you barely got to scratch the surface while you were there..

First the claim that, ‘… both cities looked equally dry. No bars, no discos, and too many beards and hijabs’ has no basis and most Pakistanis like myself would brush that off as ignorance.. Atleast half a dozen clubs operate in Karachi.. but for that, you have to be part of the circle of those in the know-how.. As for Hijabs, that is mostly the case in lower & lower-middle-class areas.. a drive down Zamzama Street would definitely turn ur world upside down with the tanktops, capris & even skirts on display

Your second claim, ‘.. Nihari is relished at Bhati Gate. Payas are ordered in Heera Mandi..’ is strange since Nihari is a dish of the Muhajir (urdu-speaking) culture that dominates Karachi.. Too link Lahore with Nihari is at best ridiculous to begin with..

If it was upto me and not our sissified excuse of a PM (or most journalists), discussing which city of the country – responsible for killing thousands of innocents in my country – is cooler, would be the last fraking thing you would be bitching/reading about.

I think my favorite topic would have been “which city should be bombed first and how we can help accelerate the transition to the stone age for these turnips in our backyard?”.

It is wrong to compare Lahore with Karachi and would be most appropriate to compare Karachi with Bombay and Lahore with Delhi. This way it would be better because Karachi folks went to Bombay and vice verca and Lahor wala went to Delhi and ask them how they feels. Would Lahori go back to Lahore and be there with pocketful of carrots. Will karachi wala like to go to Bombay any time and if Bombayite would go to Karachi. No No they are afraid of chief of Bombay marfia. He is not hiding but roaming around in his big Mercedes.

If no British, we will fight as Hindu-Muslim. If there is no Muslim, we will fight as separate castes, sometimes as states sharing a same river etc. If it is the same state, then we fight for 2 states. Thanks for being objective. There’s no comparision between Karachi and Lahore. Karachi culturally, socially, economically is around 20 years ahead of Lahore. It’s also recently came up in one of the 50 most livable cities in the world ahead of Mumbai, India thanks to the great work done by her ex-mayor, Mustafa Kamal who himself was selected one of the three best mayor’s in the world by Foreign Policy Magazine. Karachi is very different from rest of Pakistan thanks to it’s vibrant middle class who traces it’s origins from all-over India – they are the proud Mohairs, liberal, progressive, secular and educated which add’s such a good taste to the cultural part of the city.

A correction, Lahore maybe Sharif’s city but Karachi is not Bhutto’s – it’s Altaf Hussain’s of MQM’s city whose nominated mayor made it happen.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Salman Reply:

    @All Friends,
India is India and Pakistan is Pakistan, these two were together before 1947 but not any more and can’t be for sure and therefore you can not separate Islam with Pakistan and its cities, so you will always find Hijab, Naqab, Beard, Masjid, Mullah, Religious festives in full swing; does not matter you go to Lahore or Karachi. As far as cultural, social & economical growth is concerned, in my view, Lahore is richer in its cultural and historical heritage while Karachi leads in its economic contribution to the whole country. Lemme correct my friends here that Karachi is a cosmopoliton city and a city with diverse ethnic & linguistic entities and to call it only a city of Muhajir or MQM is not fair as hundreds of thousands of people from different parts of Pakistan live & work here and they have contributed a lot to the development of this mega city. This development was founded very rightly by late City District Government of Naimatullah Khan from Jamat-e Islami and very passionately executed by Mustafa Kamal of MQM. As far as law & order situation is concerned, I would say no place on this eath is safe any more but Pakistan in particular has been the target of its friends & enemies within & out side of it and therefore we are paying price for it. The world must realize that we have been a victim in this so called “War against terrorism” and give us some time to recover out of it and i am sure that time is not too far now. Karachi Rocks. Its the only and truly Cosmopolitan city in Pakistan, where not any one culture is in dominance. Cultures like, Urdu, Panjabi, Pushto, Balochi, Sindh, Bengali, Burmee, Kashmiri, Gujratis, Memanies, Ismailies, Bohries, Parsies, Shais, Sunnis Christians, Hindus all live together in different pockets of the city. It is the ultimate destination of those who are looking for better future any where in Pakistan.

Lahore is a peaceful and quieter place and more of a Punjabi culture dominated city. Its closer to Delhi in terms of culture, weather and people.

You will find sizable number of people coming to Karachi from Punjab (including Lahore) but hardly any one goes from Karachi and settles in Lahore.

Its a symptom. “Hate the sin and not the sinner”, says the Bible. [Gandhi ji lifted it from there., without acknowledging the source !. He lifted a lot from other people., for instance the Gandhi Cap., was lifted from Maulana Abdulbari Firangimahli - the Pir of Maulana Mohammed Ali Jauhar of the Khilafat Movement, He lifted the idea of "Swadeshi" (Self reliance and wearing KHADI) from Maulana Hasrat Mohani., who opened the 1st Swadeshi Stores in Aligarh and Cawnpore. At that time, Gandhiji mocked Hasrat's Swadeshi... and the list is long].

I am afraid with so much hatred for Islam and Muslims world-wide (Pakistan is the nearest and the easiest punching bag, though), there an never be real peace in India. Hindutva has become a sadistic streak. Seeing muslims in pain is HINDUTVA. Causing Muslims pain, and seeing them suffer is HINDUTVA. It is nothing but violence and crime in the name of religion. Eventually these Hindutva-vadi Taliban will destroy India., just like the Taliban destroyed Afghanistan.

India is not all milk and Pakistan not all coal-mine. Read Sam Maneckshaw’s book on the 1971 war in Bangladesh – and how Mukti Bahini was formed – and what was Operation Bangla Bandhu ! India’s RAW has been planning dirty acts in Pakistan from its inception. That was the reason Morarji Desai dismantled RAW., and for the 1st time. relations between the 2 countries improved for the better. RAW is doing very dirty work in Pakistan., its all documented.

Destruction is the fate. I am afraid. I foresee a war between India and Pakistan in 2012. No one can stop it. Manmohan Singh wants the relations to improve, but the system, bureaucracy, army, vested interests (hate is a 40 billion $ enterprise in India) do not., will NEVER co-operate with him. Manmohan cant go beyond a photo-op session cuz the bureaucracy will NOT co-operate with him. He is helpless. I see a war in 2012. A horrible war. I sincerely hope my hunch is wrong. Cuz a lot of anger has been built up., that needs release (on both sides). The cup of hate is brim and over-flowing.. RSS has poisoned Indian minds 24×7 for the past 80 yrs., so now., we have 90% of Indians who hate Pakistan bitterly. Hating Pakistan is the measuring rod for being loyal to India

True, India is not all milk. But good things with Indians is, WE OURSELVES can highlight and condemn the negative things with us. Others needn’t point their fingers at us. We can look at ourselves in mirror. We don’t have a dictator who can act at his fancy. We have opposition parties who can tare ( and have always torn) the PM in all direction if he does anything wrong.

Why we oppose Pak to have nuke arms is for the same reason. It takes a minute for the army general there (when he is mad), to shoot a missile at India. Here, it takes 1 year for us for Kasab’s trial. Our infighting in the big hurdle for our progression. At the same time, it is our greatest strength to slipping into regression. If there were people in Pakistan, who opposed Talibans since its beginning, it would not have been what it is today. Gujarath Hindu’s did not vote for BJP in the next election after the Gurajath riots. If they are supporting BJP, it is for a different reason, not for communal reasons.

Your description of the two cities makes me visit those places even more, despite the terrorist activities there. It sounds so familiar yet different as to how these cities can be so alike the cities here in india.

I have lived in karachi all my life but my family is originally from Agra and Delhi. I would like to say that most Indians have a very negative perception of Pakistan but this is not true. In the last 10 years, both Lahore and especially Karachi have improved a great deal. Mustafa Kamal did a really great job in his stint as a mayor. Moreover, Karachi is generally safe to travel to. There is crime(mostly mobile-snatching) but which mega city does not have it. And did you know that Karachi is now the largest city in the world. Plus, Karachi’s diversity is amazing. you can find people from many communities here. The blogger is testament to the fact that both cities are worth visiting.

PS. there are some mistakes in the article, none more so than ‘They drink Vodka, snort cocaine and hook up sex dates on the Internet’. This is simply not true for the vast majority of Karachiites.

Gujarat,Rajasthan are the Hindu Central. There are a lot of Hindu Fundamentalists in these States ,I presume. Moreover ,the Sindhi Population Who were driven out of pakistan also resides in these states. There is a Anger over Muslims ,I presume in these states basically due to the Sufferings of partition.Still ,Muslims lives in this Free and Secular Nation.Hindu Fundamentalist or Christian Fundamentalists will not come to your house carrying Dera(pakistan) made country Copy of AK-47&t56 putting on your throat before shooting out.
Indian Culture is simple – It expects respects from each other and secular in nature.there are clashes .but ,all over Indian Muslims are SECULAR,FREE TO LIVE THE WAY THEY LIKE.Although they are severely brainwashed in some regions of India ,It is not working the way the whahabbi terrorists thought it to be.
India is Much Much above what an average pakistani’s bigoted Mind wants to portray with.Sorry to Hurt.

Comparing the two cities of Karachi and Lahore is like comparing Apples and Oranges. They both are fantastic cities, to be enjoyed in themselves, giving us Pakistanis the diversity of experiences.

I really prefer to call myself KALA or LAKA (Karachi-Lahore) & (Lahore-Karachi). As I feel I am a Pakistani first and having lived extensively in both cities, I love them both. They can not be and should not be compared.

Love you all Lahories and Karachites.

As for indian cities, an english friend of mine visited DEL & BOM recently & he said that people used defacate/urinate in the streets, & live at the stations.

Previously, i thought anyone from asian culture was clean

Never seen anything like that in Pakistan – perhaps why its called PAKistan

I know there are questions of your safety in Pakistan and bad blood flying all over. I was in Lahore to see the cricket match 4 years ago and spent 2 delightful days there. Delightful because most of the bad blood we see and hear disappears when you are there. When India won the match, dozens of Pakistanis shook hands with us to congratulate us, took pictures with us and agreed Dhoni’s men “Ne Pakistan Ko Dho Dala”. Half a dozen of those people persistently offered to take us to their homes for dinner and sleep. They were so curious and inquisitive about going to New Delhi, Bombay, and Bangalore & Goa. One of them won’t leave me because he wanted my help to go to India for study, even though we now live in Canada but that didn’t change the perception.

Three of us spent the evening at Liberty, the equivalent of Connaught Place and it was good for some shopping and food. They would open their stores late but also opened them until late. Stores will recognize we were from India. Though I knew they charged us more but it was fine considering Indian rupees enjoyed a 25% premium anyway. Even the taxi drivers were respectful and would indulge in political talk only to point out “Look how the army has reduced us to beggars and look where your India is today even with 100 crore population”. People were mostly generous and very friendly and we only felt at home throughout. The immigration guy at the Wagah border though reminded me of his counterparts in India. He was indirectly hinting at some under the table tip from us over what he called a” mistake in your visa”. I said we were going to see General Musharraf after the match and I can call his office if he needs any corrections. The man’s attitude turned 360 degrees in 2 seconds and suddenly he welcomed and escorted us to the gates, giving orders to the personnel to help us find a taxi.

Lahore does remind you of Delhi in many ways, especially the area around Rajpur Road. The city is in ruins though in the old part and you wonder how they live there but the new part is made wide open and the roads promise pleasant rides.

The conditions in the city speak of how the government after governments brainwash and deprive their own people for whatever reasons. I thought it was better to use my 2 days thinking positive than digging anything political or social.

Nice read. I was wanting to read something about Pakistani hospitality but you missed on that part.
I hope people who talk bad about India, Pakistan should meet each other and see there is no difference. From Karachi’s description, I find it somehow similar to Mumbai. And Lahore as Delhi.

    Cheers,

Typically desperate defence of karachi by a typical karachite, poor souls too desperate to be compete with Lahore and its glory, for your karachi may have many firsts including being the first capital but it was Lahore where the declaration of this country was announced, be it benazir or zufiqar bhutto they have also chosen to make their mark from Lahore, Lahore doesnt need to compare itself to karachi, its the heart beat of this land of pure and will always be the soul of this land. well for karachi and the mess it is in, I better say you guys first need to turn your so called city which is more of a slum into an inhabitable land free of gun slingers and mafia.

Lahore vs Karachi .. hahah It seems to me that u might not have truely explored what Lahore has in terms of comparison to Karachi. But I am not going to get into a debate like that. But to be honest , giving reasons like , english speaking people and stuff like that only portrays your image as a foreign london person who wishes to see a reflection of his own country in pakistani cities rather than understanding what these cities have in store in terms of true self representation. Lahore has every bit of the glamorous life and culture that you so called found in Karachi. The truth is , whether people admit it or not , both the sides can’t bear each other , and karachiites just can’t stand tht Lahore is always given the title of heart of pakistan and always praised for excitement and zest. The only reason why Karachi out votes Pakistan is because of its massive population. other wise I would like to see a proper down to the detail comparison between the two with equal unbiased representation to see that Karachi actually matches up to the likes of LAHORE :)

SA wrote: “Question today is which party can give good governance in UP?” Unfortunately, good governance is not a priority for any of the political parties in UP where they exploit religion and caste affiliations to divide and mobilize voters. Things have gotten so bad that the venality of candidates is generally not enough to disqualify them from running for office. An ex-IAS officer of the UP cadre, Mr. P.L. Punia is a classic example. He was known as an acolyte of Mayawati during her earlier reign and her Mr moneybags. Any impartial investigation into his assets under the Prevention of Corruption Act would land this man behind bars. Instead, he trots around as a leader of the Scheduled Castes by the Congress and nobody thinks to inquire into his background. This lack of alternatives is the problem that is eating into the vitals of Indian democracy. Just because he has won an election, we are supposed to respect people like him. Anna Hazare’s movement has launched a bold experiment to intervene in this process as veto players where they vet candidates based on their position on the Lok Pal bill like pressure groups in the US. For example, the Americans for Tax Reform has ensured that most Republicans running for elective office sign a pledge not to raise taxes. This is just the beginning.

That a “sea” city like Mumbai has taken almost 20 years to wean you away from the love of the mountains is a testament to the shockingly abysmal condition of most of the beaches in Mumbai. I actually cry every time I see them, especially the Juhu beach, presumably the creme dela creme.

However, should you choose sanyas in say Goa or Andamans or Pondichery, then do let some of the bhakts know so that we can have darshan once a while :)
