When creators come
Last week, legendary fashion designer Sir Paul Smith was in Delhi. He was on a couple of days’ private visit to the city.
Sanjay Kapoor, MD of Genesis Luxury that brought the Paul Smith brand to India, along with the British High Commissioner hosted a cocktail reception to celebrate Sir Paul’s visit to the city at the later’s sprawling mansion in the Capital’s diplomatic area.
No doubt, the venue was buzzing with people by the time my wife and I reached. Editors, fashion designers, models, businessmen, socialites and other creme de la creme of Delhi’s society were there in full force to catch a glimpse, or even exchange a couple of pleasantries if possible, with the legendary fashion designer.
Paul Smith was more than cordial to any one (read all guests) who went up to say hello to him. It was amazing to see how he greeted every one with warmth and wit that he’s well known for.
In the past too, some of the big names have either come on secret visits or came with people interaction and brand building in mind. Last year, Burberry’s designer Christopher Bailey made a visit to Mumbai and the party he hosted at Aer at the Four Seasons was by far the best done by any brand in India. There too crowd thronged the venue. Jean Paul Gaultier makes visits to India albeit quietly. Giorgio Armani came a few years back, so did Calvin Klein. If they come on a private/secret visit, atleast the media makes it a point to bring their visit to the public and I know for a fast that those who love fashion would love reading this as well.
This year’s Mint Luxury Conference was the best so far. And there’s a reason to it. Three well known designers came to attend the same. Legendary Diane von Furstenberg, Angela Missoni and Christian Louboutin. No doubt, be it the conference itself or the peripheral events where they attended, it was a hit. Last year too the conference was special when legendary Emanuel Ungaro came and spoke. People just loved it.
I feel more and more such creators should visit India. This not only will make many fashion lovers feel closer to their labels, but also prove to be the best form of advertising for all these brands without spending a dime!
