Venue Dilemma
To make the event a success, it’s also important to have a venue that’s permanent for fashion weeks
After many seasons of successful fashion weeks only that New York Fashion Week chose to shift its venue from Bryant Park to Lincoln Centre last season. British Fashion Council for long has been organising London Fashion Weeks at the Natural History Museum on Cromwell Road in London and Paris Fashion Week is synonymous with the Carrousel du Louvre.
For us, it’s about time that we had a venue that also should synonymous with our fashion week. The one being held in Delhi being the oldest and the biggest in the country, I feel that it’s about time that the event found a place where it can settle down for a long time.
When fashion weeks started in the country it always found the best venue in five star hotels. Those days it was feasible as the event was rather small in terms of participating designers. But as the number increased, venue got shifted from hotels to outside areas. The best by far has been that of Pragati Maidan. Despite the fact the the security, etc can be pissing off sometimes, and the approach from the main entry till the venue often being long and harrowing, the expanse of the hall made it the best venue on all counts.
The venue is clean ans well structured as opposed to the one in Okhla in Delhi where the event was held sometime back. It can accommodate a large number of stalls in the exhibition area without being claustrophobic. Show areas are nice and located next to each other. Lounges and cafes too have their space in the most comfortable areas.
I wonder whether we can have this as the permanent venue in the coming seasons for Delhi fashion week. Efforts thus should be made to make it a regular venue rather than the organisers running around each season looking for a place to host the event. By doing so the event will lose its sheen and number two, unwanted and unexpected troubles in terms of licences and permissions will also crop up as it happened it the past.
Sometime back there were big talks about how the government is going to grand land to the Fashion Design Council of India where it will set up a ‘Fashion Hub’ with permanent venue for fashion weeks, a five star hotel where the visiting dignitaries can stay, permanent designer stalls, etc. That time I thought atleast now we will have a place where events can be held regularly and fashion weeks and its venue will have an identity. Alas, that later proved as all talks in the air and nothing ever moved in that direction.
Till such a time we have a place on the lines as a “Fashion Hub”, one should make a valiant attempt to atleast stay in one area and make the event look like a successful one rather than a nomad.
