Designer Touch
It was only recently that my wife Neena, who edits Marie Claire India, told me that she had come across a box of matches introduced by a young fashion designer. According to her the box of match sticks, other than some stains of colour, had nothing special and looked just like any other but was priced rather steep.
Then I saw the set of cycle rickshaws that had the touch from some of our fashion designers. While some looked really nice and different (because the designers really worked on them), the others looked as shabby and ordinary as the ones you normally get to see on the road.
This makes me wonder why are some of our fashion designers trying so hard to get the attention. In the case of this particular matchbox, who in the world is going to buy that to light a cigarette or their gas stove using a ‘designer match box that costs several times more and looks and lights the same way as a normal one?
I have also seen some of our well-known designers introducing fragrances, pens, etc that cost just the same as some of the renowned ones from the west. I really wonder how many of them sell in the market. It’s not just the designers, even the ones launched by our movie stars face the same fate. They just sit on the shelves and accumulate dust. If you are beginning to think why I am opting for such a negative attitude, please don’t. I make my rounds in the stores and ask around and I am stating my opinion here based on the feedback I received from the market.
Instead of making these kind of valiant attempts that bear no fruits at the end of the day, I feel it would be better for them to try equally hard and make a difference in changing the way some of the uniforms donned by our public servants looked. Their creativity should be used to change the way shabby aspects of the public dealings. After all, even for the existing uniforms the government is shelling out huge amount of money and if the same can be used to create some thing that is aesthetically pleasing then why not?
With the Commonwealth Games approaching fast, it will be great idea if our fashion experts can make a difference to the way New Delhi looked!
