A Virat experience

In both a good and a very bad week for the Indian Navy, I cannot help but recall my own night out on a ship as a defence correspondent for a wire service in Bombay.

I had always wanted to sail in a submarine but at at the time that was a strict no-no for anybody but the sailors and officers assigned to that particular vessel. I did get to sail on the INS Virat, though. and I recall that particular adventure was not without its hurdles.

The navy officials were utterly shocked to be faced with having to host a woman aboard their ship. It was the time of a naval review by the Prime Minister and then PM Narasimha Rao was to arrive three days later in the middle of the Arabian Sea to check out India’s naval fleet in all its glory.

My chief reporter assigned me to the job but he soon had defence ministry officials breathing down his neck for that. They hotfooted it to our office and tried to bully him into withdrawing me from the assignment But my then bureau chief was a feminist of sorts and he would not budge. “Either take her aboard or no one at all,” he insisted.

“You want to be the only one not covering the PM review?” asked the Defence PRO.

“I will be asked questions. But then I will make very public the reasons why we were left out,’’ he replied.  ”In a country which has given the world its first woman prime minister, do you dare to say that any woman reporter is unequal to a man on the job?’’

Now that was what clinched the argument for us. The INS Virat had hosted only one woman ever before – Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi, when she spent a night on the ship, was then just the wife of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and created no upsets in protocol.

My simple assignment, though, had become a big deal as messages flew back and forth between naval headquarters in New Delhi and their western command HQ to clear my night out on the ship. Ultimately, I was told, it was the then Admiral who cleared my assignment on the condition that he would have no objections if the Captain of the ship was willing to guarantee my security in an all-male baston.

The only way the Captain could have done that is by giving up his cabin to me – which is what he did with the warning that I must be up and out at the crack of dawn because the cabin would be used by the then Defence Minister (Sharad Pawar) in the morning who would arrive a few hours before the Prime Minsiter, expected at noon. The Captain chivalrously spent the night on the deck with the sailors but I was on that deck even before the bugle was sounded for the reveille the next morning, keeping my promise to make as little difference to the ship’s schedule as possible.

That was one of my most memorable assignments , apart from a similar review many years later for the Hindustan Times when the Indian Navy organised a world-wide fleet review in the Arabian Seas and I sailed on a ship viewing all kinds of vessels from all navies across the world. However, that was a day assignment not requiring a sleep-in on a ship and caused no trouble to the naval authorities because by that time there were many other women defence correspondents on the beat and they could guarantee our safety in numbers.

I once almost drowned in a swimming pool as a child and was always afraid of the sea before I spend the night on INS Virat and I have the Indian Navy to thank for getting me over that fear – there is nothing quite like the sting of salt in your face and the blue-green waters beneath you in endless miles of sea with not a speck of land visible from anywhere at all.

After the Virat adventure, I tried hard to persuade naval authorities to let me in on a submarine but India was then in the nascent stages of fitting out its submarines and, in any case. The generosity of the navy did not extend to that particular risk beneath the waters. I always wondered how it might feel to be in a submarine and see only fish swim past you but I also have a fear of closed spaces and thought my claustrophobia would not be able to take the confinement.

My heart now goes out to all the sailors and officers who died in the submarine fire early this week. I still remember the courtesies that some of their colleagues offered to me when a woman on their ship was yet a novelty. I was never more cossetted, cared for or fussed about in my life, never before had people standing attention when I walked into a particular area where they were gathered. This is the only peace time naval disaster that I can think of and both the navy and the nation hwve indeed suffered irreparable loss. We will take a long time to recover. But for the families of the sailors in the disaster, nothing can ever make good the loss of their near and dear ones.

May their souls rest in peace.

    Mr Sharma;s focus is the govt’s inability to control mass protests in urban centers; but not the rape itself, or what the govt should do from a legislation/punishment perspective.

    He is giving an impression that rape is OK; mass protest is Ok; , but the govt should be able to control mass protests/ He did not mention a word on what the Govt should do to minimize the number of rapes happening in that country..

    He sounds like the NRA folks here – they blamed every body else – violent movies, violent videos, liberal culture, liberal media, mental health – for the horrendous shooting of the 21 children of 6-7 years age here in Connecticut last week; they did not mention the easy availabiliy of guns, easy availability of magazines that shoot 60 bullets per minute, or the need for controlling gun violence.

    TJS George in his column in the Express talks about the politicians involved in rape and getting away with it. Along with many others, he refers to the Sooryanelli case and the ice cream case in kerala. Suryanelli was the case of a rape of an underage girl for several months by politicians, movie actors, and businessmen. As usual the drivers and servants got punished. Ice cream case involved the present de facto CM Kunjali Kutty. Nothing happened other than the two girls involved dying in mysterious circumstances. If this is what is happening in the “enlightened” Kerala, just imagine the situation elsewhere.

    On this day, 2012 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth, a son of God. and a Messiah was born. He had two Marys very close to Him – Mary/Mariam, His Holy Mother, and Mary Magdeline, His follower, disciple, possibly even wife (per Dan Brown/da Vinci Code and per some of the recent research scholars)…

    However, both the Marys were relegated to unimportant and derogatory slots by the creators of the church. Almost all the Protestant sects, and some of the Catholic offshoots focus their prayers exclusively on Jesus without any respect or consideration for Mother Mary; all the sects from day 1 caricatured Mary Magdeline as a *****, as a tempstress, resulting in the tempting, inviting sculptures of her in Rome. The church imprinted in all its followers a vision of Mary Magdeline as a *****, as a sinful woman, as a lady of the night. A repositioning/relooking of Mary Magdeline is happening now; with the church control on its flocks on the decline.

    Obviously, the church portrayal of both Marys – Mother and Magdeline- was due to their vested interest in keeping women out of the church’s administrartive apparatus, out of the church wealth, out of church management, keeping them as permanent second class.

    But in India, long before Jesus was born, Shakti was considered as powerful as her husband Shiva. Arundhati was as knowledgeable as sage Vasishta. A Rishi’s wife was equally respected as the Rishi. Adhanarreshwara was half man and half woman. Draupadi was an equal or more powerful character than the 8 or 10 male characters in the great creation of Ved Vysa. Adi Sankara had to get into philosphical arguments with Bharathi Devi before he could win over Mandan Mishra.,Sarada Devi had equal divinity as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

    And today, millions fall on the feet of Mata Amritananda Mayi.

    Indians worship at 50 or odd Saktipeeths where Sati’s body parts were supposed to be dropped when Shiva carried Sati’s dead body, and danced his cosmic dance, “Thandava” in anger against his father-in-law, king Daksha,. Indians from East to West, South to north worship Durga; with nine days in October dedicated to her pooja.

    So, how can it be? The Gregorians and Pauls had a vested interest in keeping women permanently suppressed. I think the new widespread rape phenomenon does not have anything to do with suppressing women. It has everything to do with sexual urge unleashed uncontrolled. . Something is happening. Dont tell me it was always there; it never got reported etc. Yes, it was there; yes it got reported – but it was far and fewer.

    what explains this huge increase in the last few years? Is it urbanization, TV shows, women in shopping malls (I remember women in Kerala will not eat alone in restaurants etc 20 years ago, partly because eating in restaurants was considered “cheap”, and partly because women did not go for shopping alone.) Tough punishments – castration – may make these guys think umpteen times before committing the act.

    I think it is combination of many things which lead to rape.
    Lower grade given to girls still in comparison to boys in many
    households, girls being treated as commodity in advt., TV and films, man thinks and beleves that he is superior to woman and he also believes that girl won’t tell anyone because of loss of respect, no scare of law because of extremely low conviction rate. I also think that if prostitution is legalized
    rape cases may come down.

    LUCKNOW: A gang-rape victim from Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar, who was again
    violated by the investigating officer (IO) probing her case, has now alleged
    that she was also raped by the inspector in charge of the police station where
    she had lodged her complaint. While the IO was arrested on December 14, no
    action has been taken against the inspector. Now the victim has written to the
    chief minister for justice.

    Maan Singh, a senior sub inspector (SSI)
    posted at Akbarpur
    police station in Ambedkar Nagar, was arrested
    on December 14 from a hotel in Faizabad by SSP D S Yadav. The arrest
    came after the SSP was informed that
    the cop had brought the gang-rape victim from Ambedkar Nagar to the hotel and
    was raping her. The victim was rescued from the room after the cop was caught
    with his pants down. Now the rape victim has alleged that in-charge of the
    Akbarpur Kotwali, inspector AK Upadhyay, had also raped her.

    As per the
    woman, she was gang-raped in Ambedkar Nagar last month. Her family had lodged an
    FIR in this connection at the Akbarpur police station. Maan Singh was the IO of
    the case. Allegations are that after the police failed to initiate any action
    against the accused, the victim approached the SSI who promised to help her.

    He then suggested that she should accompany him to Faizabad and appear
    before the deputy inspector general (DIG) Faizabad Range of which Ambedkar Nagar
    district police is a part. The unsuspecting victim agreed and accompanied Maan
    Singh to Faizabad. The cop took the victim to the hotel and raped her. During
    her ordeal, the woman somehow managed to send a message to her neighbour in
    Ambedkar Nagar, who contacted the Faizabad SSP.

    The girl has now alleged
    that by the time the SSP raided the hotel and arrested Maan Singh, she had already
    been raped by Upadhyay as well. Upadhyay
    is the immediate boss of Maan
    Singh. The victim, in her letter to the senior officers, has alleged that
    though she had provided this information to the officer investigating the rape
    case against Maan Singh, no action has been initiated against the accused
    inspector.

    The woman has now alleged that since the matter was related
    to the police department, she was being threatened not to testify against the
    arrested SSI before the court and was also under pressure not to raise the issue
    of the inspector’s involvement.

    Faizabad city SP Subhash Singh Baghel
    said he was getting the charges verified. “Whosoever involved will not be
    spared.”

    Vinodji,

    the media is NOT anti-establishment as you have accused it of being. Definitely not against the congress or Sheila Dixit. In fact, the media handled them with kid gloves as far as possible. It was only when the ineptitude of the congress at all levels became impossible to defend did the media go against the powers that be.

    Look at these stupidities:

    Sonia Gandhi sent her naukar to speak to the agitators in front of her “fortress” and call their leaders for “talks”. When the eager leaders came with great anticipation of the congress supreme leader talking to them, they were asked to “speak” to another chaakar of hers, Motilal Vohra. VohraWhen the agitators asked why the mataji couldn’t be spoken to, Chaakarji said that she is busy (at 12.30Am)!

    The Home Secretary of the government of India praises the police for their success in nabbing the rapist gang, Sheila Dixit, the darling of Delhi’s voters, came on TV condemning the Delhi police and demanding the CP’e heqad on a platter!

    One of the agitators, Pinky Virani, agitatedly asked on TV, “Where is the BLOODY PM?”. This is the first time in my long memory, anybody, that too a lady, has called the PM a bloody PM!

    The prime Minister, who had gone into hiding from day 2, went on air mumbling some inanities, even while the able Shinde Saab, another self proclaimed naukar of Sonia Gandhi, declared that we will not go out to meet the agitators, who are no less than Maoists.

    Krishna Tirath, Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare, on Thursday called for setting up fast-track courts to provide speedier justice to rape victims.

    “There should be fast-track courts to conduct trial of rape cases. Only then, the rape victim would get speedy justice,” Tirath said in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on the demand of grants for her ministry.

    She stressed that rape victims have to run from pillar to post for 10-20 years to get justice. She also appealed for social initiatives to end the tradition of dowry. “Those who demand and give dowry should be boycotted,” she said.

    Stating that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government is committed to the welfare of women and children, Tirath appealed to the states to provide more opportunities to women and to “take some definitive measures in this regard”.

    Our boys and girls (and the adults) who demonstrated peacefully should be admired. There is a hunger, widespread frustration all over 6the country, that the system does not work, that the so called democracy is a sham.

    Our children has been peaceful so far – Anna movement, 11/26 protests, and now this. I am afraid the future protests may not be peaceful. Blood will flow; as in the streets of Tunisia and Egypt..

    What is freedom when women and children can not be protected? What is freedom when a Congress leader (APCC chief) and a senior IPS guy in AP say that women should not wear provocative outfits? What is freedom when the so called national highways are left with potholes all over and they become death traps when accidents, maiming, and deaths happen repeatedly and nothing is done?

    To me it looks like the opportunity to lead , to provide a meaningful service oriented administration, to quench the thirst that the “left out” vast majority has. It will be a shame if BJP does not unleash him. it will be a shame if Modi decides to sit in the shadows of Gujrat.

    One of the important things political parties, especially Congress, have to do is to look into the seat allocation to women in the state assembly and parliament elections.

    Women are grossly underrepresented in state assemblies and Lok Sabha. Of the 4030 or so seats in the 28 state assemblies, only 311 are held by women, less than 8%.

    Congress ruled Maharashtra with 288 seats has only 10 women MLAs.(3%)

    Kerala, with the highest literacy rate among men and women in the country, has only 7 women MLAs (in a 140 seat assembly). Of the seven, Congress has only one; and the rest are LDF. It is in a way ironic that the first assembly (1957) in Kerala (EMS Namboodiripad communist govt) had 6 women among 127 seats In between the women’s number had gone upto 19 seats.

    In the caste/religion based seat distribution, it looks like the women are given the short end, or no end at all.

    The women seat reservation bill never went anywhere thanks to Lalu, Maulayam etc

    LONDON: Hundreds of foreign doctors, including those from India and Pakistan,
    are routinely failing key medical exams in the UK, according to a British media
    report.

    “Success rates are so poor that medical associations want doctors to be
    allowed six attempts at passing the tests rather than the current four,” ‘The Mail on Sunday’ reported. The
    findings raise fears that trainee medics, mainly from India, Pakistan and
    Nigeria, are not qualified to treat patients despite spending three years
    working for the
    National Health Service (NHS) before taking the exam. Until they pass the
    exams, which qualify them to practice independently as hospital physicians or
    GPs, trainees continue to see patients – under supervision – in placements at
    hospitals and surgeries.

    However, figures show that foreign doctors are substantially more likely to
    fail than UK graduates, with
    communication cited as one of the problems. While just 9% of British doctors
    fail to pass the knowledge and practical exams, more than 63% of foreign doctors
    do not reach the standard to pass.

    Foreign medical associations are now demanding that doctors are given two
    additional opportunities to pass the tests amid claims that examiners may be
    discriminating against non-UK graduates, the report
    said.

    However, their claims have been refuted by UK specialists who say a
    study showed “no substantial effects of gender or ethnicity on
    examiner/candidate interactions”, and that passing the exams is dependent on
    having the appropriate skills.

    “This is scandalous. If a doctor can go on failing they shouldn’t be treating
    patients in the NHS and that should be
    stopped,” Joyce Robins, co-director of campaign group Patient Concern, said.
    “There has to be a cut-off point and four attempts is too many,” he said.

    Figures show that 63% of foreign doctors failed the test. Of the Indian
    doctors taking the test, 63% failed at the first attempt. For those from
    Pakistan, there was a 62% failure rate, while 68% of Nigerian doctors failed at
    the first try.

    BELGAUM: Rs 198 lakh of the taxpayers money was spent when the President was in Belgaum to inaugurate the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in October. The government renovated the Circuit House (CH) ahead of President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit. It spent over Rs 161 lakh on renovation and around Rs 37 lakh on furnishing the room, where Mukherjee spent just an hour on October 11.

    RTI activist Bhimappa Gadad from Mudalagi in Gokak taluk sought information from the public works department on the expenditure incurred during the President’s visit. There are two Circuit House buildings in the same compound near the central bus stand. One was inaugurated two years ago. The old building and the compound was renovated during the World Kannada Meet (WKM) held in the city last year. This before the government spent Rs 32 lakh in 2010-11 and Rs 18 lakh in 2011-12 for renovating the CH.

    Ancient Buddhas, Modern Peril

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/23/opinion/sunday/chinese-led-copper-mining-threatens-afghan-buddhist-monasteries.html?_r=1&

    WHEN the Taliban blasted the famous Bamiyan Buddhas with artillery and dynamite in March 2001, leaders of many faiths and countries denounced the destruction as an act of cultural terrorism. But today, with the encouragement of the American government, Chinese engineers are preparing a similar act of desecration in Afghanistan: the demolition of a vast complex of richly decorated ancient Buddhist monasteries.

    The offense of this Afghan monument is not idolatry. Its sin is to sit atop one of the world’s largest copper deposits.

    The copper at the Mes Aynak mine, just an hour’s drive south of Kabul, is to be extracted under a roughly $3 billion deal signed in 2007 between Afghanistan and China’s Metallurgical Group Corporation. The Afghan finance minister, Omar Zakhilwal, recently said the project could pump $300 million a year into government coffers by 2016. But the project has been plagued by rumors of corruption; there was widespread talk of a $30 million kickback involving the former minister of mines, who resigned.

    Raped by 16 men, boycotted by society

    http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/MadhyaPradesh/Raped-by-16-men-boycotted-by-society/Article1-980851.aspx

    Even as the Delhi gangrape has led to protests across Madhya Pradesh and
    made the state government take measures for the protection of women and
    children, life has not changed an iota for two teenaged cousins who
    were raped by 16 men in Betma (35 kms from Indore) last February.
    Neha, the

    younger sister, moved to Gwalior after getting married in April

    It was well known that during the earlier Mulayam Singh regime in UP ,
    the gang lords in his party were at war with themselves for the spoils from loot of public money , land grab , extortion etc. The political parties opposed to SP, the local media , and the people of the state had withdrawn and gone into hiding .. too pertrified to protest . That was the Samajwadi Party …
    Then I read what Sheela Bhatt Editor News of Rediff .com wrote in her
    column …Why shameless politicians must be blamed for Delhi rape.. December 24, 2012 16:18 IST…“……. Dikshit’s shameless
    government will find many excuses to pass the buck, but the fact that Khanna
    and she are not on good terms cripples the Delhi administration.The chief minister cannot cry foul over not having control over certain administrative matters because her Congress party has been in power at the Centre for the last eight years.Dikshit and Congress President Sonia Gandhi [ Images ], incidentally, have a blow hot, blow cold relationship.

    Dikshit’s coterie — that consists of her sister Rama, her son Sandeep and some bureaucrats — are resented by many in her party. As a result, things move in New Delhi only where mega projects with mega bucks are involved. Or else, Dikshit’s hold on New Delhi is slipping……”

    So are we seeing an open war between Sheila Dikshit and her son one
    side and Neeraj Kumar protected by his Mentors in the central establishment of the Congress party on the other side? and on incident which has shocked the entire country .
    Who is paying the price for this war ?
    ..The statement recorded by the SDM shall no longer be good evidence as it
    becomes tainted by her admission. I read that another statement has been recorded .. putiing the victim to more mental torture.

    The situation as it is emerging is shocking and disgraceful and inhuman by a callous govt and an incompetent police … but then we have a PM who is
    more worried whether the recording of his statement was “ Theek hai “

    World’s longest bullet train service begins in China

    AFP | 4 hours ago

    1

    — Photo by Reuters

    BEIJING: China started service on Wednesday on the world’s
    longest high-speed rail route, the latest milestone in the country’s
    rapid and — sometimes troubled — super fast rail network.

    The opening of the new 2,298-kilometre (1,425-mile) line between
    Beijing and Guangzhou means passengers will be whisked from the capital
    to the southern commercial hub in just eight hours, compared with the 22
    hours previously required.

    China Central Television broadcast the departure of the first train live
    from Beijing West Railway Station. It also carried live reports from
    inside showing passengers toting cameras to apparently snap
    commemorative photos.

    Trains will travel at an average speed of 300 kilometres per hour
    over the line, which includes 35 stops in major cities such as
    Zhengzhou, Wuhan on the Yangtze River and Changsha.

    State media have reported that December 26 was chosen to start
    passenger service on the Beijing-Guangzhou line to commemorate the birth
    in 1893 of revered Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

    The Beijing-Guangzhou route was made possible with the completion of a
    line between Zhengzhou and Beijing. High-speed sections linking
    Zhengzhou and Wuhan and Wuhan and Guangzhou were already in service.
    China’s high-speed rail network was established in 2007, but has fast
    become the world’s largest with 8,358 kilometres of track at the end of
    2010

    25% of GUJARAT’s MLAs are rapists (have rape cases against them). WOAW.

    Another Daastan of Rape from Rape Country :

    Vijayawada/Hyderabad Away from media galore, however, family members of
    victim of another para-medical student in Vijayawada are waiting for justice
    five years after the incident.

    Exactly five year ago, on December 26, 2007 Asha Meeraan, 19 year old
    pharmacy student was gang raped inside the girls’ hostel she was living and
    brutally

    Asha Meeraan, a resident of Tenali Town in Guntur District was a student of
    NIMRA Engineering and medical college at neighbouring Vijayawada city in Krishna
    district. 100 K.m. away from her home she was staying at Sri Durga Ladies Hostel
    in Ibrahimpatnam village near her college.

    In the early hours of morning on December 27, 2007 Ayesha’s naked blood
    soaked body was found in the hostel toilet with legs and hands tied to water tap
    and the iron rod, with her own dress.

    Her head was under pool of blood and it was clear that her head was banged on
    the wall and made unconscious before she was brutally raped. Autopsy report
    found that she was not only being raped before getting killed of brain damage
    due to head injury, but that inhuman act continued even on her dead body.

    At that time this case caused sensation in Andhra Pradesh when the names of
    senior Congress leaders were brought up. GRANDSON OF FORMER DEPUTY CHIEF
    MINISER, K. RANGA RAO (then Municipal Administration minister), Koneru Satish,
    who was the Sarpanch of the village was one of the suspects. Another suspect was
    Congress Mandal President Cheruku Madhav Rao !!!

    For 5 years, shrouded in lax investigations by Police, the case has seen many
    flip-flops. In September, 2010 the lone accused Satyam Babu, a physically
    handicapped illiterate man from a backward community, was convicted and
    sentenced for life. Meeraan’s family, however, claim that Babu was a
    scapegoat to save the real culprits

    Copied this post from another website.

    An aggravated sexual assault can be termed as rape, even if there were no
    penetration ,biologically speaking. Laws in India have to be changed about
    sexual assault and in respect to the treatment of women in the society.

    But a rape ( aggravated sexual assault) is a learned behaviour. A respect
    to a woman ,developed in a man ( because it is a learned behaviour) should
    effectively check rape incidents. In USA for example, in some cities rape
    incidents are very high. If compared, to per population basis, rape incidents (
    in that case ) are less in Indian cities compared to US. But that cannot be a
    solace. In our country women Goddesses are worshipped in temples. So,
    naturally we have to think as to what is happening to our society? Have we
    lost our roots? It is because rape in Urban areas are increasing by every
    year and statistics for every city shows that.

    We are fast losing our roots and emulating the west. Since rape is a
    learned behaviour ( or an acquired psychological behaviour) we must know
    that all types of commercialization of women making her a commodity is
    bound to lead to a wrong emphasis , of looking at a woman. A woman is a
    person , a whole being and may be much more sentimental and sophisticated
    due to her feminine nature than what a man can be. But treatment of
    womanhood as a commodity leads todangerous consequences , a
    dangerous behavioural pattern in men. Social background, genetically, tendencies also lead to development of a rapist.

    In our Puranas it is said that reading about three women in their
    original depiction by Valmiki in Ramayana and Bhagavan Vysa in
    Mahabharata cures the perverted sexual behaviour in men. But for sure I can
    say that it can inculcate lot of respect for women. These women are Sita ,
    Ruma ( wife of Vali ) ,and Droupadi. There are many commentaries by
    Sanskrit scholars who said that reading stories of these three woman even cure sexual fantasies.

    While reading Ramayana it is also warned that after Kishkinada khanda and
    reading about the heart rending cries of Ruma over the body of Vali, one
    must stop reading and shall take bath and read the last chapter of
    Ramayana wherein coronation of Lord Rama is described. And so, is the
    case with Sita. In Valmiki alone, in Yuddha Khanda a battle ground is
    described where Lord Rama is perceived to be dead , with all arrows all over
    his body like a procupine. Sita comes to the battle ground , weeps over her
    husband, ranting about her mind,her beliefs, her desires and her love of husband , with dead Rama’s head in her lap.
    Even Rakshasa woman who accompanied her, suddenly engulf in grief and
    start weeping. After reading this scene , it is advised that you should go back
    and read about Kumbha Karna’s death once again.

    Respect for woman is a learned habit. One has to cultivate it and his
    family background and the literature he reads helps him cultivate this. The
    literature is such as the ones which shows the greatness of their feminine
    nature , their natural propensity to show love and affection and crises they
    face just because they are woman. Unless otherwise in a world where a
    woman is more or less treated as a commodity just like chocolate for
    example, a man cannot develop respect for woman or would be able to
    understand their feminine,beautiful mind or heart.

    Dear Ravi,
    the high priestess of secularism and chief convener of hate India brigade, our resident citizen of the world (the world that does not include India) Ms Arundhati Roy said that the reason Delhi-ites have taken to the streets protesting against the rape of the girl is that she belongs to the middle class.
    In one stroke, she manages to doubt the intention of thousands of folks braving water cannons, lathi charge, trumped up murder charge and official indifference. Quite apart from being callous and insensitive, she is factually wrong.
    This lady fighting for her life in Safdarjung Hospital comes from very humble parentage- her father is reportedly a loader at IGI. Not for the first time, Arundhati twists facts to suit her warped sense of narrative.
    Now, she and I have access to the same newspapers and TV channels- being both inhabitants of the same city. So, would you not say that she is willfully distorting facts and downright lying?
    She should stick to writing fiction.
    As for you, you are evidently not an ostrich but insist on behaving like one. When you spit with your head buried under sand, be careful it does not clog your nostrils.

    Mindful of 3000 years of western liberal grime, which has all but totally obliterated pious conservative Hindu thought, which can only be eradicated by forceful thought leadership; a new committee named मस्तिष्क अवनेजन: was set-up. Led by तरुण विजय it has recommended that the following 10 Commandments be carried out straight away.

    1. A L L History books ever written should be burnt at once and Historians Romilla Thapar, R.S. Sharma and Arjun Dave be executed for Treason against Hindu Truth (is there any other?).

    2. NCERT – run by anti-Hindu Euro-Indians should be shut down.

    3. A L L Schools should be re-named as The Convent of Saraswati Shishu Mandir, to envelop conservative Hindus and Ipad owning, Mall Rats in a single concept.

    4. Patriotism is good but it will take भारत वर्ष only so far and no further, better to replace it with blind bigotry and fanaticism, which promises इमथा राम राज्य .

    5. All books from now on will be published by विद्या भारती Publications and will be personally edited by The उपकुलपति, Professor & Double Doctor Murli Manohar Joshi. Hindus will be set the objective of contributing the second most vital mathematical concept, the -ve Constant, needed to debunk Quantum Physics.

    6. Nehru Topi, Skull Caps and even colourful turbans are banned. Wearing of काली टोपी will earn the fashionista 10% discount in Desi Shops. Black Cap will be compulsory for the follicly challenged digital chat उपाध्याय.

    7. ALL forms of personal greetings are banned from this moment; they are to be replaced by a Half Mast Salute and clear full-throated rendition of जय राम जी की. Any dissenter heard uttering जय हराम जी की, will be लाठी beaten to death.

    8. Price of मूंग की दाल will be set at half that of black महा दी दाल.

    9. To avoid any Quota type issues, Education will be exclusively available to Brahmin Caste only, and will be दक्षिणा funded. All knowledge will be transmitted orally and retained in a rote learning fashion. Naturally recall tests will be Oral.

    10. A conscription army – consisting of ALL क्षत्रीय in भारत वर्ष – will be mandated to recover traditional Hindu Lands – which lay between the Hindu Kush to Port Morseby.

    I think it is wrong way to judge a state ’s crime scenerio on the basis of cases recorded. An honest police which records crimes and does not try to turn away the complainant shall always be on the back foot. Take the case of UP ,the police force is the biggest rogue force like their political masters and they always scare away complainants… and then the political masters go around touting the figures. Do you remember Amitabh Bachchan’s ad campaign ” UP mein hai dum …Kyun ki yahan Jurm hai Kum.”

    New Delhi-110001

    23rd December,
    2012

    ADVISORY

    Whereas a number of private satellite news TV
    channels have been showing programmes covering round-the-clock direct telecast
    of the events relating to public demonstration being held in New Delhi in the
    wake of the unfortunate and tragic incident of gang rape of a young girl on 16th
    December, 2012 in a moving bus.

    The channels have been covering the
    agitation and the efforts of the law enforcing authorities to maintain law
    & order, as well as the commentaries of the channel reporters to portray the
    incidents from their own perspectives.

    Whereas this incident and the

    NEW DELHI: Tamil
    Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa
    on Thursday walked out of the national
    development council (NDC) meeting accusing the Centre of stifling voices of
    chief ministers.

    The Tamil Nadu CM said that she was not given enough

    How can the Centre
    expect a chief minister to read her speech and give suggestions in 10-minute
    time slot, asked the Tamil Nadu CM. No chief minister can be expected to give
    his/her views in 10 minutes, she said.

    I get the impression that the

    The police then let these paid hooligans walk away quietly.

    The levels of banality to which some blogers will stoop here is astounding.

    Here on this blog there are a bunch of people among who are MBA’s, Engineers, IT Professionals, and even a Foreignsickly trained Chartered Accountant. Yet statements against Arundhati Roy, Barkha Datt, etc. come thick and fast. Not once has any one acknowledged that the only sin these honourable ladies and their fellow travellers have ever committed is to represent their leftist, feminist view of the world. These views by their very nature are likely to jar against the reactionary views of acute nationalist and religious fundo kinds thronging this blog. Arguments are detached from their perspectives and attached to personalities. From that point on it is easy peasy, forget the argument, forget the content, just attack the individual.

    This phenomenon is described here and I quote…

    Part III of the book analyses the basic elements of the Hindu communal ideology, as propounded by some of its founders like Savarkar and Golwalkar, which we see reflected in all the activities of the Sangh combine, including in the ideological propaganda attempted through school education. It is shown here how the Hindu communalist ideologues not only, by definition, exclude the non-Hindus from their conception of the Indian nation but cast them in the image of anti-nationalists and therefore objects of hatred. They also glorify Hitler, and the fascist methods used by the Nazis to annihilate the Jews are held up as an example of what the Hindus could do to the Muslims. Further, it shows how the Hindu communalists (who in practice remained as loyalists as minority communalists) tried to masquerade as nationalists. They changed the very definition of nationalism (seeing primarily as a fight against Islam), so that they looked like nationalists and the actual nationalists (who swore by Hindu-Muslim unity and the centrality of the struggle against colonialism) looked like the enemies of the people.

    Lead actor of Radia Gate, mouth piece of Congress, Ms. Burkha Dutt had called young protesters lumpens and she declared Constable Subhash Tomar dead when he was very much alive and was being taken to the hospital. Is she a clairvoyant? Ms. Roy has no problem if young girl is raped and brutally mutilated only because she assumed that the unfortunate girl belongs to a middle class and rapists are poor people. Shinde compares protesters with armed Maoists and he wants them to be obliged because our HM
    took out time to meet them on Sunday a holiday for him. Our President’s
    son calls protesting women as ‘ dented and painted’ . Delhi Top police officer
    knows exactly the results of post morterm report before even it is conducted. In all this where , Delhi police, Delhi government and Center are busy playing a blame game , everyone has forgotten about the young protesters who had defied this cold whether and came out for the justice.

    1. I have the book by my side and can easily re-type chunks of it which will answer your questions and more. But what would be the point. I am sure you do not doubt my ability to type. As far as the content is concerned I am less sure of my eventual death than I am of you remaining uncovinced. So I hope you do not mind if I spare myself the effort.

    2. BTW, have you deigned to read- my name is Vasu… I am planning to purchase it for my curiosity. I am afraid this means nothing to me, the fault is probably mine since I am at a very advanced stage of dementia and seem to have lost my ability to comprehend simple sentences.

    I measure our society – not against totalitarian failed state called Pakistan, that is a futile exercise – but against matured western democracies.

    However, I do not wish to fall in the trap where Communalism is redefined by Sangh organizations – as it suggests in the paragraph I quoted – so that in warped kind of way Secular organizations are labeled as Communal and Communal organizations are rebranded as liberal.

    Quote</strong
    Dear Ravi,
    the high priestess of secularism and chief convener of hate India brigade, our resident citizen of the world (the world that does not include India) Ms Arundhati Roy said that the reason Delhi-ites have taken to the streets protesting against the rape of the girl is that she belongs to the middle class.
    –Unquote

    Run away, peddler of dangerous fiction. Because you have no answer to specific instances of lying.

    Ravi Reply:

    I ignored it is because it was a trap and a provocative one at that.

    So lets discuss this.

    In my way of thinking not only Miss Arundhati Roy is RIGHT, she did not go far enough. The rest of your analysis is that of a man who is consumed by hatred of the left in general and Miss Arundhati Roy in particular.

    There are many aspects to this rape which are not being mentioned.

    In India Nursing (most people regard Physiotherapists as Nurses) is regarded as a lowly profession just as it used to be in Victorian England and elsewhere. Among the many taboos that have been erroneously attached to this caring profession is the mistaken belief that it is the exclusive domain of women of loose moral (read sexually promiscuous). The Victim in this case was a Physiotherapy student.

    Among the country bumpkins of Delhi and its surrounding areas, there is a prevalent belief that girls from North East of India are also sexually promiscuous and therefore fair game. This may well be because a lot of the girls trafficked and sold into prostitution in India still come from Nepal and North Eastern territories. If others are getting it, then why not me. is one of the calculations made by the perpetrators.

    Girls’ living in Hostel away from home are not closely watched by their relatives and therefore express their freedom through sex, is another myth that is widely believed in India.

    Caste has for-ever been the reason for RAPE in India and is one of the most unreported crimes in our rural areas. 4999 Dalit rapes have been reported here by me on more than one occasion and your absence from that debate was noted. In Urban India where caste is being steadily replaced by Class similar dynamics apply. Lower calss girls being raped do not attract the same media attention as middle-class girls do. That is true in Europe too. Oh she is so LS I am sure you have come across this phrase in Delhi.

    इक रोंदी सी ती पंजाब दी तूं लिख लिख मरे बैन
    अज लखन तियां रोंदियाँ तेनो आखा वारिस शाह नू

    Choudhury raping a dalit girl is no NEWS no FIR for that, Dalit man raping Choudhrani, now that is NEWS and a hanging offence. Arundhati is 100% right.

    Delhi has grown rapidly in the last three decades and it has drawn in rural simple folks, who do not understand middle class aspirations of education based upward mobility. Landed people with no education are now being left behind and they resent that. Some of that resentment takes the form of Rape.

    Etc.

    Now not ALL rapes in India have All of the above ingredients but they all have one or more of them.

    So not only Arundhati was RIGHT she could have extended her analysis to include all of the above.

    Arundhati is making the same point that was made in regards to the Murder of Model Jessica in 1999. She was attractive middle-calss model so made the news. Other 5000 murders which also took place in Delhi that year did not. I am sure there are others that can be added to this list.

    The initial protest was the right thing to do, and some of the reaction of authority’s in-charge astounded me. However, I am not equipped to meaningfully join in the party-political stuff that surrounded it. I am not blind to the fact that a spontaneous protest eventually gets high-jacked by other more sinister and politically sophisticated forces, as has happened here. Some of government’s reactions have to be seen in this light.

    AshishC Reply:

    Ravi,
    Now you have totally lost it; evidenced by a total veering off anything remotely related to the case.
    a) Does anyone know if this girl (bless her soul) is from the North-East? This is news to me. In the absence of that confirmation, ascribing her rape to the North Indian hatred/ liking for poor women from NE is strange.
    If you are not ascribing anything as such, then why bring this NE into the debate?
    b) “Arundhati is making the same point that was made in regards to Jessica Lal….”.. yes, she is, and that is precisely why she is wrong and the lie must be called.
    The only bit of identity that we have of this girl is that her father is a loader in the IGI, she was the first graduate in the family and no one else in her family has any income. She was training to be a physiotherapist so that she could support her parents.
    How does that make her a part of the middle-class elite? In fact what partciularly moved me about this protest is that middle class/ upper class boys and girls/ men and women, students from JNU/ DU and even schools were the first to spontaneously start the protest.
    c) No one will deny that our society has inbuilt biases; caste and religion divides us. And, rape is first and foremost an expression of power over the poor and hapless and disenfranchised. But, having said that, what is particularly crass about Arundhati is that her propensity to dismiss these protests as of no import because it is done by the middle class.
    Pray, what class does she belong to?
    I do not hate the left- I wish I could dig up my piece from these blogs where I tore Doc Mishra to shreds for his ill-educated comments about the left. However, Arundhati is less left than twisted. I admire many social scientists in India- almost all are from the left. I do not count Arundhati as among the ones that deserve respect.

    Vinod Sharma is right – “moving pictures move civil society”. Since any negative situation – corruption, rape, and so many potential future fireballs – will work against the ruling (Congress) government, the only way they can create a moving picture is by doing something very positive – such as denuking Pakistan bombs, or a Modi scale development accomplishment. Creating a spectacular positive is difficult; so the only way these pictures do not get created is by avoiding negatives, or quick action on negatives. Congress, instead of facing the issues and trying to solve them, has been fighting these.

    NEW DELHI: A detained Samjhauta Express bomb suspect has
    confessed to plotting the 2005 firing on prominent Kashmiri rights

    The Indian Express said Rajender Choudhary, currently in the custody

    University teacher had suffered serious injuries and recently had one of
    the several bullets removed for lead poisoning.

    Mr Choudhary is learnt to have also confessed that the attack was
    carried out on the instructions of slain RSS instructor Sunil Joshi.
    They reportedly started planning the attack in 2003, soon after the

    All;
    People, who were wondering( including me) what is this Ideology of pakistan, read it. How damaging this is for the world peace and outrightly dangerous for India. Muslim fundoos, who take their inspirations from this ideology, in India are equally dangerous. This should be a wakeup call for all psuedos.
    When we look at the salient features of what has been propagated (through various state initiatives, history text books and the media) as ‘Pakistan ideology’ over the decades, the following assertions stand out:
    • The idea of a separate Muslim state (Pakistan) emerged to counter a possible post-colonial domination of the Hindu culture and politics in the region.
    • Pakistan also came into existence to blunt historical conspiracies by the Hindus to absorb Islam and Muslims into their own belief system.
    • The Muslims of Pakistan are a nation in the modern sense of the word. The basis of their nationhood is neither racial, linguistic nor ethnic; rather they are a nation because they belong to the same faith, Islam.
    • Pakistanis may share a common history with the peoples of other faiths of the region (especially Hindus), but their faith is more importantly rooted in the history of Islam beyond the sub-continent.
    • Since Pakistan came into being to assert the fact that Muslims and Hindus are two different nations, Pakistan should be a state where the Muslims should have an opportunity to live according to their faith and creed based on principles and laws of Islam.
    • As a Muslim ideological state it is also the duty of the Pakistani state to defend the interests of other Muslim states and countries.
    • Pakistan’s ideological and geographic borders are such that various anti-Islam forces are constantly conspiring against the Pakistani state from within and outside Pakistan.
    • Pakistan needs a thorough security apparatus to fend off such forces.
    • Such forces constitute countries run by Hindus, Christians, Jewish/Zionist, secular and Communist doctrines (from the outside), as well as groups and individuals propagating distinct ethnic nationalisms (from within).
    Though Pakistan does not recognise sectarian divisions between Islamic sects, it remains to be a Sunni majority country where Islamic laws based on historical legislative narratives of Sunni Islam have every right to take precedence.
    • It is the duty of the Pakistani state to promote Islamic laws and practices in the society so the society can be prepared to collectively embrace them without hesitation of the emergence of an Islamic state run on the principals of the Shariah.
    • Pakistan does not discriminate against non-Sunni Islamic sects and minority religions, but Sunni Islam (constructed on the modernist Islamic thoughts of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Muhammad Iqbal as well as on the Islamic scholarship emerging from friendly Arab countries, especially Saudi Arabia), will rightfully dominate in the social, cultural, religious and political policies of the state.

    I am in some kind of dilemma here. I have been pushing my son to watch news channels instead of cartoons since more than a year, he hasn’t bothered so far – he is 12 year old.

    Now, incidentally both of us are at home since past few days (on Christmas Holidays) and I am asking him to watch the cartoon channels rather than the so-called news channels. Why? It seems as if the world has stopped after the Delhi gang-rape. Nothing else of importance has happened in last 10 days. While I do condemn the incident, I must add that our national media has become either too lethargic to find news elsewhere or at least has lost a sense of proportion while reporting incidents like these.

    Rape happens and would continue to happen, whether we like it or not. So, what do we do about it – protest at India Gate and make politically correct statements across TV studios. Is there a limit to it? How long should such protests continue? What are the chief demands of the protestors? Is someone trying to get political mileage out of the misery of a woman? Has the president’s son really said something terribly incorrect?

    My understanding is this. The incident (of gang-rape in a Delhi bus) was unfortunate and all should condemn it. People do have a right to get agitated and protest against such a heinous crime. The media is also within its rights and duties to highlight such protests. However, this isn’t the first time such a thing has happened, and surely it won’t be the last. So, are we going to hold the country to ransom every time a rape happens in the country or should we exercise a sense of proportion in reporting such crimes. What were the main demands of the protesters – apart from “hang the culprits”? Did the protesters assume that the accused were being shielded? The Delhi Police did a wonderful job in nabbing the “accused” persons – not culprits to me yet. Almost everyone I know is for severe punishment to the culprits, so why continue the protests and its 24X7 media coverage? Has an incidence of rape not happened in a non-Congress ruled state ever? Did Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi not make a similar sexist observation on a section of women in the past? Both the gentlemen were stating the facts – the facts are not politically correct is a different matter altogether.

    To me hanging the rapists is not a solution, at least till we define the word rape itself. I’ll give you an example. A young boy and girl live together and of course have consensual sex over a number of years without bothering to get married. A few years down the line, something happens and they break up. Now, the girl can go to the courts/police and claim that she has been raped by her boyfriend and as per the existing Indian Penal Code, the boy would be arrested and tried for the crime. Now, would you hang him – the crime is the same?

    Also, under which law has the “unlucky” girl been sent to Singapore for treatment? I wish and pray for her a quick recovery however do wonder if similar mercy would be extended to other victims in the future.

    Sorry for the long post.

    Ishwar,

    A nice long post. A rape and the other example you have quoted
    shoud be treated differently. Where consensual sex is concerned our
    laws are heavily loaded in favour of woman. Even dowry law is loaded
    in favour of women so much that only a verbal complain by a woman
    can send her husband and her in laws behind the bars. I think these laws should be discussed and changed. Where rape is concerned fast,
    and certainty of the punishment is more important than the severity of
    the punishment. The current punishment which can go upto 10 years
    imprisonment will deter the persom from the rape attempt if we see
    such people caught and punished in timely manner.
    This unfortunate girl has been sent to Singapore because government
    ran out of ideas how to controll the situation and they thought that they earn some brownie points by sending her out of India for better treatment.
    If she gets cured – I pray that she does get cured and lead a normal life -
    than she should thank people of Delhi for this.

    ishwar- I believe the Delhi protest is the result of an “enough is enough” frustration. Peaceful action by citizenry for positive outcomes is good.

    However, my question is – is rape a federal/central crime or a state crime. In USA it is a state crime; each state has their own punishment guidelines. It looks like that it is a federal crime in India and the punishment is lax,and not a deterrent. Is one element of the protest to push the parliament to pass tougher laws?

    wHY protest against the federal govt if the punishment guidelines and trials are all under the respective state guidelines?

    The protests are only nominally about the rape incident – sometimes it just takes a trigger to set off a huge reaction.
    I am sorry you think that what Mukhtar Naqvi or Abhijeet Mukherjee said can be even remotely justified- they represent feudal, patriarchal mindset of a large number of Indians. That does not make them right. They are not just politically incorrect, they are grossly, obscenely wrong.

    No, we should not hold the country to ransom (though, why would blockading parts of central Delhi be construed as holding the country to ransom is beyond me) everytime a rape happens. But, when you are facing apathetic, feudal mindset and self-congratulatory political class and bureaucracy, the protests are what you got left. The fact that both BJP and Congress (and SP and Akali and SS etc) have plain misogynistic politicians – who let slip their guard once too often- tells us, the common people with a stake in good governance, that unless you come out to the streets, create a huge spectacle, the government (and that included all the political class) will remain apathetic.
    Your point about the boyfriend is totally off topic. Unless your are suggesting that the accused in this gangrape incident were all boyfriends of this unfortunate girl?
    About the law under which this girl was sent abroad for treatment: it does not need a law for the government to spend money from its discretionary budget. Probably the government did it because it feared more trouble were the girl to die in Delhi. Yes, the government should take responsibility of all victims of such gruesome acts- especially when it is clearly deficient in ensuring safety of its citizens.

    I admit that my views regarding some dented-painted women may be feudal, however, I am not ashamed of it – I have the luxury of not being a public figure. Poor Abhijit Mukherjee had a hard time on Times Now with Arnab last night.

    Having said that, when I observed that the country has ben held to ransom following the Delhi rape incidence, I was refering to the 24X7 media coverage of the protests. 200 people protesting should get a coverage proportionately – irrespective of the cause. To me, the story of rape sells on TV and on this occasion, the media took it too far.

    What exactly were the demands of the protesters? How many of them were practical and what did we achieve?

    The boyfriend-girlfriend story is not completely out of place. There have been instances when a boy has spent years behind the bars on similar charges of rape. A few of the banners of the protesters in Delhi did ask for the capital punishment for the perpetrators. Now, we don’t have the rapes clasified into various categories under the IPC. Hanging of the culprits would set a very bad precedence.

    While we want less discretionary powers with the politicians in cases of corruption, we happily allow them to exercise the same in case of ‘celebrated’ rapes as if the miseries of other victims were any less. You have summed it up beautifully when you say that the govt. should take the responsbility of all such victims because it failed in its primary duty of protecting its citizens.

    Islamists attack Indian student in Germany, slash tongue

    BERLIN: A 24-year Indian student in Bonn was brutally attacked by Islamic extremists who slashed his tongue when he refused to convert, German police said on Thursday. The student was attacked on Christmas eve when he was on the way to his place in Bonn.
    The men enquired about his religion and asked him to convert to Islam, warning him that they would cut his tongue if he refused to do so, Der Spiegel reported.
    The student, who was not identified, told the police that he was attacked by two men from behind after he ignored them. The attackers beat him up, slashed his tongue and fled in a car. Police spokesman did not give details of injuries but said the information that the victim gave was credible.
    A passerby found the student and called an ambulance. The student was admitted to a local hospital and was released a day later.
    The Bonn police’s department for politically motivated crimes is investigating.
    It is not the first time this year that Bonn has hit the headlines as a result of possible Islamist activity. In May, a Salafist was arrested after stabbing two police officers during a counter-demonstration against a display of caricatures of the Prophet by a local right-wing populist party.
    Earlier this month, another member of the orthodox Muslim group threatened to take a hostage in order to force the perpetrator’s release from prison.

    well, Mohan , one of the Muslim groups, I think the extremists, have just started their 8th “Mujahid” conference here in Kozhikode. Mullalhs and dignitaries and attendees from Saudi Arabia (they must be bank rolling this) , other mideast countries, Pakistan are supposed to attend. The conference was inaugurated by a saudi head-geared guy (a big honcho in the Mulladom there). The inaugural session had an attendance of 1 lakh. They are expecting 5 lakh people on the last day of the conf two days from now. Several Kerala ministers and a few central ministers including the minister of state for home affairsN attended the inaugural session. The central minorities minister Rehman Khan will address the gathering on the closing day.

    I am sure you may have not seen this covered by any national English channels. i m also sure there are dozens of terrorists attending this meeting – without any monitoring from NIA etc,

    So, in broad daylight, they are spreading Talibanism. The difference is that they are using “soft” techniques, instead of the hard methods of of Khilafet movement induced Mopla rebellion and the “padayottam” by Tipu Sultan 100 years before that.

    btw our friend Romila Thapar has portrayed the 1920 mopla/malabar rebellion as an agrarian movement against brutal landowners, and has nothing to do with Hindu conversion, rape (targeted at the higher caste), demolition of temples etc that happened throughout Malabar.

    One sees and experiences several things in ones life. I have seen and attended meetings all over India – the meetings will have Indian names, it will be in Indian named venues – such as Nava bharath Krishi Sammelan in Dr Swaminathan Nagar or adhunik rajya thanthr aur Gandhiji in Nehru Nagar etc… I never thought I will live a day to see “mujahid” conference in “Salafi Nagar” 30 miles from my home. .

    The Lessons from Anti Rape Agitation

    http://www.manushi.in/blog_content.php?blogid=44

    Even as the entire country is seething in anger at thebrutality of the Delhi gang rape case with daily reports of more and more such barbarous acts coming from all over the country, the Chief Minister of Delhi writes to the Home Minister to order an independent probe into the devious role being played by the Delhi Police in messing up the investigation. The charge is further substantiated by the SDM of Delhi who alleged that she was pressured and threatened by the Delhi Police to abandon video recording of victim’s testimony and instead asked to use a set questionnaire provided by the police to recordthe victim’s responses.

    This after:

    The brutal lathi charge on peaceful protestors while the agent provocateurs allegedly brought in by NSUI, the student wing of the Congress party to derail the protest movement are allowed to disappear into thin air after disrupting the movement;
    Draconian measures including strict curfew, suspending metro services and sealing off Central Delhi to prevent protesters from gathering at the few spaces permitted in official Delhi for public gatherings.
    The deadpan, conviction-less “TheekHai” speech of the Prime Minister on December 24 asking people to avoid violence. It amounted to pouring salt on their wounds;
    The arrogant, insensitive comments of the Home Minister equating Delhi protesters to Maoists and implying he should not be expected to meet the protesting riff raff;
    Ham handed arrests of 8 persons by the Delhi Police in a visibly malafide attempt to implicate IAC for the murderous attack on the policeman who died after attack by lumpen elements at India Gate.
    Lodging of equally malafide FIRs against a former Army Chief and Baba Ramdev on the charge of instigating protestors to violence.
    All these are clear indications of the total disdain with which the Congress Party treats the people of this country. This arrogance in all likelihood comes from the Party’s miscalculation that all these are effete middle class protests—people who don’t vote  anyways while the “real voters” have been bought over through doles, promise of cash transfers, dreams of free housing, subsidized food, free this-free that.

    As Rahul Baba told his admiring supporters, “The cash transfer scheme will be a game changer. With this you will not only win the 2014 election but also the next election!”

    Clearly Rahul Baba expects that voters will be so addicted to crumb gathering and sarkari dependence that these “begging bowl schemes” will keep the PMs chair safe for him for ever! If he knew some basic economics he would know that in the process the economy would be so wrecked that there will be no money left for crumb throwing, unless of course he manages to persuade all those of his Party who have stashed away in secret foreign accounts humungous amounts of public money they have looted from India to bring back a portion of it to help him keep winning elections through the loyal army of beggared voters.

    Hopefully come 2014, the Congress Party will be jolted out of its complacency and be made to see that the country is in no mood to thank it for transforming Indians into an army of bhikharis!

    Given this conduct, is it any surprise that neither the young protesters nor the millions who are watching this grotesque sarkari drama through live TV coverage are in no mood to listen to bland assurances being doled out to them by the government? We have seen time and again how the police go out of its way to protect criminals and tyrannize innocents because their real income comes from patronizing criminals. The Indian police understand only two codes: a kick from above and a bribe from below. In this case, the rapists are too poor to buy off the police. Families of rapists have openly disowned them.One is therefore forced to ask: Who is then delivering the “kick from above?” The politician who owns the bus fleet that had employed the six rapists and murderers? Or is it that the police are so long addicted to patronising and protecting criminals that it comes as an instinctive response to everyone in the police hierarchy?

    Those demanding that law against rape be made more draconian to include death penalty please take note: Do you want the very same police which dares mess up with evidence even under the 24×7 watchful eyes of the media in a high profile case to be gifted more powers? The likely consequence will be that the bribe rate for tampering with evidence and misdirecting the court will shoot up further. Would you trust a man who routinely uses a lathi to tyrannize innocents with an AK 47? Does it not point to the urgent need for far reaching police reforms as part of a larger agenda of judicial, electoral and administrative reforms to make the law and order machinery transparent and accountable to citizens? Can fast track courts deliver justice if the police are addicted to protecting criminals? Why should every case not be settled within a set time frame?

    On a positive note: I feel very enthused by the fact that in all the demonstrations against this brutal rape in particular and sexual violence in general, we saw young men outnumber women. They have braved freezing cold, lathis, tear gas shells, arrests on trumped up charges which could ruin their careers to make common cause with women. India has a long and unique tradition of men not only spontaneously joining women’s rights movements but also leading them. This is an important reason why we have never witnessed gender war on women’s rights issues as happened in several other countries, including western democracies.

    Our PM and Sonia Gandhi are praying for the recovery of the rape victim
    and both have assured that the rapists will get the exemplary punishment.
    Few days back Ms. Gandhi had gone to Haryana to console a 16 year old
    girl who wad raped by 8 Jats and there also she had made the similar promise.
    Girls father has already committed suicide because the unfortunate girl was
    videographed while being raped and her video is being shown openly in her village. I have no idea what has happen to those rapists but would like to

    Joe was a house keeper who had this habit of drinking from his boss’s liquor bottle and replacing it with water.
    The boss, James, did suspect him but tolerated it for a while. But
    when this became a daily routine, James decided to do something to trap Joe.
    Accordingly, James replaced his drink with a French wine which changed color when water was added to it. Joe, not aware of the trap, took a few swigs and added water as usual. The wine changed color from red to milky white. Joe realized he was in for trouble but was determined to get out of it.
    James told his wife about Joe’s misdoings and that he would make Joe accept his follies.
    So he shouted: Joe?
    Joe answered from the kitchen: Yes boss?
    James: Who drank my wine and added water in the bottle?
    There was no answer from the kitchen.
    The boss repeated the question, still no answer.
    The angry boss marched to the kitchen and threatened Joe, What the hell is going on? When I call your name you respond with Yes Boss and when I ask you a question, you remain silent. What impertinence?
    Joe said: It is like this. In the kitchen, you can hear only your name being called. You don’t hear anything else that is said, I swear.
    James: How is that possible? All right, I will prove you wrong. You stay right here in the hall with Madam, I will go to the kitchen and you ask me a question, OK?
    So the boss went to the kitchen.
    Joe shouted: Boss?
    Boss: Yes Joe?”
    Joe: Who becomes intimate with the maid in Madam’s absence?
    Silence – no reply.
    Joe again: Who made the maid pregnant?
    No reply.
    Joe, yet again: And who arranged for her abortion?
    James came running from the kitchen and said:
    By George, you are right. When one is in kitchen,
    one can’t hear anything but one’s name. That’s strange!!!!!!…..”

    I am sure many of the rapes here also have connections to powerful politicians and bureaucrats. There were two mass rape cases in Kerala in the last 15 years – the “suryanelli” case and the “ice cream” case. 30 or so prominent politicians, businessmen, bureaucrats were involved in Suryanelli; lower court sentenced most of them; the high court nullified and all except one were set free. The main accused in the ice cream case is now the de facto CM of Kerala (Kunjali Kutty of Muslim League). The larger implication is – if these things can happen in Kerala and the culprits can get away in Kerala -, with its literacy, with its leftist leanings, with its people’s high participation in the electoral process – what about UP, MP etc..are we doomed

    Gopi;
    Very good question. I have been thinking about it for sometime.
    To begin with, some thoughts as a For – empowering an ordinary citizen. Yes, this concept of every man has a right for a gun, so as to defend himself was put in place some 200 years or so back in west- I mean USA. A vast landmass, with little policing and governmental authority to check violence. every person was responsible for himself. that was in wild west days.
    In my growing years, in my teens, I had come up in life, in a tough neighbourhood, and my first knife in my pocket( I am a doctor, with best education but I was a teenager also once)it saved me once from some serious injuries. Any weapon on your person, gives you a high, and that is an established fact.
    Gun laws in Europe are very strict, because of small nations( in comparison to US) and better policing, and that worked. London police( Bobby) does not carry guns.
    Now, in US, things have changed, and in my opinion, gun laws should also change. but- I will ask you to visualize a scene, where, US has a landmass of 3 times the size of India with 1/3 population. Life style is very indivisualistic, and joke was, neighbourhood has become very crowded, I have a neighbour, who lives 2 miles from my home. This is cliche, but it is not uncommon. believe me. In such isolation, people need some assurance.

    [Reply]

    pankaj#1 Reply:

    Gopi;
    Some more for the FOR:
    An ordinary citizen is without arms, rogues have all the fire power( UP, Mumbai and all underworld mafias). I could have got my hand gun for rupees 25 only. you heard it correct.( Half of my family was in Army) ( market value today may be 3-5 lacs). Family, will not allow it, having gun in house, a big No, No. that is what we are, Indian, civilized once, having faith in authority to give security.
    it is getting very long, I will cut it short.
    If the male friend of this rape victim had a gun, those bas… would have been slained then and there. Give gun license to people with very sound credentials and genuine need. present scenario in US, where anyone can have, guns, even Assault rifles is faulty. needs a change, for sure.

    Unfortunate that the Delhi government took the Kasab way of doing things. that is send the girl overseas– in short avoiding tackling the issue, even when the best medical treatment is available here. Sometime back Indian government had refused treatement to malala as they felt the Taliban will get angry.

    Now they have thrown an Indian girl to Singapore to avoid a situation where locals would have got angry.

    Somehow they have insulted the competency of Indian doctors here.

    ~~~RAPE OF MINORS IN SHARIA HAPPENING IN INDIA~~
    ———————————————————————————
    The Midday investigation has thrown a startling amount of sordid information on how Muslim personal law and Sharia is used by Arabs to rape minors in India:
    From NDTV—————————
    The Arab and The Qazi
    These predators have been perpetrating a blatant crime under the veneer of nikaah, abusing the Islamic rules of marriage. Abusing the sanctioned provision which allows a Muslim man to have four wives at a time, many old Arabs are not just marrying minors in Mumbai and Hyderabad, but marrying more than one minor in a single trip to the country.
    The Pimp and The Victim
    A healthy stream of women keep flowing into the city from all parts of the country to solicit the Arab clientele who have turned Mumbai into a sex haven. For as little asRs 2,000 per job, scores of women line up every evening hoping to catch the eye of the adulterous tourist.
    Over a month-long operation, Kranti Vibhute posed as a would-be bride and Bhupen Patel as her friend trying to help her get the deal. They found that these deal brokers, prostitutes and Qazis have been running this business quite explicitly.
    A Qazi, who solemnises the weddings and also facilitates the divorce proceedings, takes 50 percent of the negotiated price as his cut. The agent, who sources the girls, takes 25 percent of the balance amount.
    The pimps, cab drivers and sub-agents charge Rs. 500-1,000 per deal.
    The Arab gets a sex slave for a temporary period, who he calls his ‘wife’, and takes her on a vacation with him. Once the honeymoon period is over, he brings her back dumps her with a ‘talaaq’ and goes back to the Qazi’s office for a new bride. The girl gets her cut and lines up for the next husband to come her way.
    The Qazis solemnise these sham marriages, in violation of Islamic principles of nikaah and talaaq. A woman cannot be married off to another man unless her first husband gives her a divorce, or she has sought khula (separation) and has completed the iddat period (a gap of at least three months and 13 days).
    A small suggestion to prevent rapes and other serious crimes against women in India and make women feel safe. Police should start taking strict action on complaints of Eveteasing , stalking ,passing lewd coments ,sexual harassment of women at workplaces and elsewhere ( guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in the Vishakha case ) . This may require changes in IPC to make them serious offences.Maintaining a register of people accused and convicted of these and putting it on the internet , is a good suggestion. Some some such steps could reduce or prevent the bigger crimes
    Praveen knowing Delhi and Knowing India there are chances that the police will use tougher laws to make money and harass people.
    So the real issue is punishing policemen punishing lawyers, punishing judges who get bribed by the rich and powerful or are incompetent. We need fast tack courts and a justice system which delivers results i weeks and not years.
    There has to be a safeguard to the police misusing laws.. Already a lot of women complain of rape in case their live in partner does not marry them.
    The biggest case is of Preeti who claimed Madhur Bhandarkar raped her 200 times. What was she doing for 4 years? there has to be punishment for this type of complaints also.
    Yes IPC needs to be made stronger. But the real issue is fair and fast implementationl.
    Why blame police? Police takes cues from the political class. And what has the Delhi political class done – who does not open his Abhijit, an MP and the son of the President blames the woman, blames the protesting youth as misguided by politicians; the minister in charge of law and order refuses to meet the crowd and refuses to state any new policies. suggested rule changes to minimize future occurings; a prime minister who is clueless; a police commissioner whom even the CM cannot control… no wonder Delh iis the rape capital…
    One of the segments yesterday on PBS evening news was about this. We were at a new year party last night; almost every one asked about this. What they could not understand is that why the government does not care about the attacks on women, although there are powerful women ((Sonia Gandhi etc) leading the government. …
    Both the OWasi brotherers – Asasudin and Akbaruddin- are venomous people. They own part of Hyderabd. Akbaruddin is involved in all sorts of mafia activities; was shot last year, almost died. The elder brother brought 1000 plus Mayanmar Muslims under the refugee program and got them settled here – as if we do not have enough problems here. They have officially split from the UPA because of the temple/Golconda Fort issue (I should say the temple people are wrong in this situation); however Sonia G wants them because Jagan party may get more votes than Congress in the next parliament election.
    The elder brother was very vocal about the Assam situation, and he talked about an Islamic Jihad if part of Assam was not given to the BenglaDesh settlers (sort of). Nobody criticized that. Asaduddin and Akbaruddin may be aiding and abetting terrorists. But then, our anger and action should not be restricted just to the Islamic terrorists; the rapists, corrupt politicians, corrupt officials — they are committing even larger damage to the nation. An ex Congress minister’s son was responsible for the rape/killing of a nursing student in the interior AP last year; he disappeared while the police was bringing him back from the town where he was picked up; but then mysteriously disappeared. Police says he ran away (!!!) They are still searching for him!. II put them as terrorists along with Akbaruddin and his brother, .
    What one 23-year-old taught us
    She was 23. She came from Ballia from Eastern Uttar Pradesh. She was a paramedical student. On 16 December, she thought she was boarding a bus. But in fact, she was boarding a nightmare. That nightmare has ended in Singapore.
    That is all we really know about her. And out of that much we have to construct an obituary for her. The media gave her names. Nirbhay. Damini. Amanat. But as Nilanjana Roy writes on her blog, “Don’t tell me her name; I don’t need to know it to cry for her.”
    http://www.firstpost.com/living/rip-what-one-23-year-old-taught-us-572276.html
    ______
    No one knows why some murder/rape/violence cases capture the public’s imagination, whilst others do not. As one report states that a woman is raped every 14 hours in Delhi. Public’s reaction to these rapes can best be described as apathetical, yet this case rightly inspired mass protest and a candle lit vigil.
    I am sure that everyone is in some way affected by such a case. Many people would want to know every gruesome detail of her injuries, other want to know as much about her as decency would allow, many people experience mixed emotions oscillating between raw anger, desire to extract violent revenge on behalf of the victim and a silent prayer. I found myself uttering Wahe Guru, Wahe Guru as my mind tries to comprehend the mindlessness of the crime. I read every news, every opinion piece that my google search throws up.
    I even trawled Blogs associated with various News sites, including the BBC, etc. I found the experience of reading other people’s reactions therapeutic. Anger, sympathy, desire to reform, and above all a hope that something positive may come out of this tragedy, were the recurring themes of most posts on these blogs.
    EXCEPT THIS BLOG: where the resident Islamophobe TROLL(s)
    found it necessary to re-report for a thousandth time crimes committed by
    visiting MUSLIM tourists from the middle-east.
    A blatant attempt to draw attention away from the tragedy of the day and the debate it has kindled about how women are treated in India. Nowhere else did I come across such insensitive, overtly communal, party political and crass post to say the least. Silence of other bloggers over this despicable behaviour is astounding. So long as these TROLLS do not miss an opportunity to take a cheap swipe at Congress, who gives a damn if they show gross insensitivities towards the victims. Blame it on Muslims, no matter what.
    She was Nirbhay, which is more than one can say about impotent men found here.
    All;
    it has been snowing here all day, roads are clogged, driving is difficult and best thing to do is to sit at home and by extension, go to computer.
    Now, this rape victim has gone to other world, which should not be so discriminatory. If you look at anatomy, please do not think that I am being crass, this holds good for all humanity, including my mother(passed away since long) sisters, daughter and everyone. The difference of anatomy is few inches of extra muscles, created by evolution, in its wisdom. otherwise, a woman is in no way inferior to man, on the contrary, superior to him. Now, even an ordinary man, thinks himself superior to a woman, because he has more muscles and proclivity for violence( rest assured, if demanded, woman can be as violent as man, but she has better brain, so, that next generation can be brought in world).
    OK, I will ask readers to go to TOI and read Viresh malik, he has put his finger at the right place,and made a correct diagnosis, I will not dwell for long here, you read, and draw your conclusion. I am a Delhiite and know, politicians are hand in glove with these rural ruffians because of votes.
    BTW, I read couple of posts, which harp on, why this rape got so much prominence and why not others. Blah, blah. Somebody even posted that as she is from middle class, and that is why she got so much publicity. Believe me, I read, backward class, and forward class, BS here. Please, God, help me to keep my cool.
    Just out of curiosity, does anybody know this girls caste??? So that I can defend myself that I am supporting a backward caste, Dalit/ Forward cast.
    Did not sleep at all last night.
    I do not have daughters; but my friends have, my cousins have. All of them are in the 20-25 age group. What thoughts will be going through them when their daughters are few minutes late from work, college, movie, shopping?
    A beautiful creation of God, treated like an inanimate object, beaten and potruded by iron rods, thrown out like a waste paper.. Could be my nieces, could be my friends’ daughters..
    Then I read about the perpetrators. A boy of 18 to a man of 35. The ring leader is a school bus driver. How many kids he may have abused , raped; threatened? And he was drunk while driving. Imagine he is driving these kids while drunk.
    All those people who protested.. it tells me all is not lost in India.. there is hope .. the beautiful young people, purpose driven, frustrated– that they will not and cannot take any more.
    “yatra nari astu pujyante, ramante tatra devathaa” (God is there where woman is worshipped/honoured)..That thought uttered 4000 years ago made possible to have a Gargi, Sulabha, Maitreyi, etc later. What happened to their descendants?
    The indifference of the government, the tone deaf statements of many leaders and the so called intellectuals made the pain even deeper. Why question the motivation of the protesters when the heinous crime and its aftermath is there for all to see?
    Why did these men do it? It was not just sex. There are too many reasons and triggers. Severe punishment, faster legal process, better prevention methods all have to be implemented yesterday.. No commissions, no delays.
    All these guys will be sentenced, will be given the maximum punishment in the books, for they do not seem to have any rich backers. When will we start punishing all, be it is done by a minister’s kin or by poor people such as these six?
    India cannot be “shining” when we worship remote women goddesses while discarding and destroying the goddesses who live with us under the same roof.
    A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves
    http://www.deeshaa.org/2012/12/28/a-nation-of-sheep-will-beget-a-government-of-wolves/
    Act 1: Let me tell you a story about an old man who lived in
    a small village somewhere that does not matter. It all began when the man’s
    sons came to him and told him that some people from the neighboring village
    had stolen a chicken from their farm. The old man told his sons to go after
    the thieves and recover the chicken. The sons said, “Father, it’s only one chicken. We have hundreds of chicken. One won’t make a
    difference.” The old man said, “Do what you please.”
    A few days later, the thieves stole a goat. Once again the old man told his
    sons to not let them get away with it. The sons said that they have dozens of
    goats and it’s not worth the trouble. The next week it was a horse. Once
    again the sons rationalized it away saying that they still had six horses that
    the farm needs.
    Finally, the next week the sons came back to report to the old man and said,
    “Father, our sister has been abducted. What shall we do?” The old man said,
    “It’s too late. You should have recovered the chicken. Now there’s nothing
    you can do.”
The author does not prescribe any solutions, may be because he feels nothing will change as he stated .It is unfair to criticize the Sonia GAndhi co on this particular incident (of course they share all the blame on the way the protests were handled).. but all the other things he mentioned – the physical rape of the country and the literal rape are all true. ALTHOUGH POLITICIANSS HAVE THEIR FAIR SHARE OF THE BLAME, IT IS THE BUREAUCRATS WHO ARE KILLING iNDIA. Police inactions, minor and major corruptions among the bureaucracy – most of these do not have anything to do with politicians; it has everything to do with the bureaucracy unchanged from the british days. of all the mistakes nehru and co made after independence, the biggest mistake was preserving the administrative machnery as it is. the system was designed not to serve people, but to serve remoe king, or a viceroy.i believe indian sheep has erached enough is enough.     From today’s Indian Express- Heroes and Zeroes of 2012..
    Jayalalitha – Back on top
    Back on Top: J Jayalalithaa
    Tamil Nadu Chief
    Minister J Jayalalithaa emerged as a leader of national stature in 2012.
    Making history after a meeting with district collectors and police
    officers in December, she made no less than 343 announcements. But more
    than proving herself as an able administrator with her fingers on the
    pulse of the common people, she took a firm stand on all national
    issues. “Tamil Nadu will not allow multinationals in the retail
    business,” she said much before FDI was taken up in Parliament. Be it
    the Cauvery dispute, in which she even managed to get an order in
    favour of Tamil Nadu from the Supreme Court, or in her opposition to the
    training of Sri Lankan defence personnel on Tamil soil, she asserted
    the views of the people of the state, proving to be its tallest leader.
    Whenever the Centre sought to encroach upon the states’ powers, she was
    the first to protest in the country, thus setting an example for other
    state-level leaders. Within the AIADMK too, she was firm in maintaining
    discipline and purged some old-timers for their misdeeds. Her actions
    instilled more faith in her among the party cadre and made her popular
    among the masses. She also broke free of the alliance her party had
    struck with DMDK in 2011 and led her party to victory in the
    Sankarankoil byelection, thus establishing her supremacy in the
    political arena.
    Ultimately it boils down to the perception people have of the leader. Vijay Kanth was proving to be an unreliable ally and she cut him to size.
    ~~~ DECIPHERING ARUNDHATI ~~ and her offbeat comments ~~~~
    —————————————————————————————————-

    I think some part of India gives too much importance to Arundhati Roy.

    Knowing her a bit through the writers circuit, I know for sure that at best she can be an impish schoolgirl and at worst a bitchy commentator– where she has been sidelined,

    Her autobigoraphical God of small of things was her best. her bitchy tripping of Shekhar Kapur (bandit queen) and racist film which made of Indian accents to please the Brits (Elctric Moon) was her worst.

    She know s how to market herself and will now never give a comment to a TV channel or a newspaper which is “ordinary”, Like say the Hindustan times or Times Now. She will never comment straight on events where mainstream media has been able to shake up people– as i this rape case or on 26/11.

    She needs exclusivity to prove she is original. So in case the mainstream medai had NOT commented on Delhi rape or on 26/11 she could have given a 26 page teary article on both the issues. Well since htey are already there… she needs to show a different approach.

    Of course she will castigate the middle class and the rich. But then will have no problems in case the same TV channels, the same mainstream media and the same middle class and rich buy her books and fete her.

    Why does’nt she ask the middle class to stop buying her books if she hates them so much…? :)

    Really Good!!

    We are all awaiting her next fiction effort… besides the works done for Outlook! They will never happen !

    Her association with Outlook goes back to the day when Outlook needed to be launched. Vinod Mehta, confessing in his autobiography says that they needed an issue, a topic which would shake up India. So they got Arundhati who said she wanted to seceede from India… and they did a cover story that Kashmiris wanted to seceede from India! Both needed publicity…!

    So it does not really matter to Arundhati whether India does well or fails… as long as she can get her bit of publicity,,, she would be happy!

    It is very easy to be poetic about the poverty of tribals, believing they are happy wedded to their way of life, But then you are also forgetting the average life span (45-50 years) deaths by starvation, (tribal belts in Orissa and Andhra), lowest literacy, superstition and deprivation.

    They all want a fair deal and means of accessing material good life. I know for sure… as I employ a few.

    Certain people who get publicity by marketing their poverty… DO NOT want them to break free.

    Sometimes it is the not-so famous people who make lasting contributions. Arundhati got fame and fortune capitalizing on “velutha” and Ammu…..ridiculing EMS Namboodiripad…(although she is a leftist now that the her writing fame has withered)

    Her mother Mary Roy has done more for women. Her landmark case on Syrian christian property rights/inheritance now allows many Syrian christian women of kerala to have a share in their family property (which until this case was only for male children). That way she has helped many Christian women, who otherwise would have become destitutes

    [Reply]

    vijay ! Reply:

    I guess Mary Roy has done more for women.

    Gopi the basic fact is Arundhati Roy may have written a fairly decent biography… but then we sont need to take her word as gospel truth when it comes to terrorists, 26/11 or Kashmiri Hindus (RSS and right wingers in her pantheon)

    Knowing the media circuit a bit let me reveal how she operates.

    –> Prannoy Roy is her first cousin. So NDTV is in her pocket.

    –> Sagarika Ghose owner of CNN IBn is a family friend and her father Bhasker Ghose gave Arundhati the funds for her first films– Massey Sahab and Annie gives into those ones– when he was head of Doordarshan.

    –> Tarun tejpal was working for Outlook under Vinod Mehta and was her “close” friend who launched her first book– God of small things.

    Now take away NDTV, CNN and outlook out of Arundhati roy’s system, she would be nowhere.

    Ok… she has full rights to have her views. But let us not be hypnotised by English speaking clever women who makes fun of other english speaking women who are protesting on the rape case. She really is similar to Abhijit Mukherji who commented about painted dented women.

    Anonymous Reply:

    You are right. I believe the days of English speaking clever women (or men) speaking for the people are gone. Media will feed on these; but people definitely are at a different wave length as the Gujrat elections showed.
    The animosity that media has against Modi , Mamta etc is partly based on their disbelief that ordinary people like Modi and Mamta without any political family “connection” can get ahead in the rumble tumble of politics.

    As far as you are concerned, let me be bold enough to say that you DO NOT understand me at all. As exemplified by the time when you declared that I had lost the Sharia debate to Foriegnsickly trained Accountant. Neither he nor you (who declared as me losing) understood my (liberal) view point on Sharia.

    I am sorry to say in my world being Right Wing is substantially inferior, without a shadow of doubt.

    World in general and Hinduism in particular is naturally liberal, tolerant and inclusive. Where is the acute nationalist right-wing Hinduism (needlessly over intellectualised) is an attempt to create an exclusive and homogenous religion of the Book. Sadly the Book(s) chosen are pure fiction and significantly inferior to the original essence of our Vedantic philosophy for which India is better renowned and a leader of. Right-Wing thinking, be it in Rwanda, Serbia, the Third Reich, Tea Party, etc are aberrations, against nature as cancers of Culture.

    If you think that I frighten easily then let me assure you that you know me even less than I thought.     Oh Ravi;
    My simple suggestion made you write a long letter.
    OK, let us see, what you are saying.
    Luvy, a word introduced by you and Ashish made a mincemeat of it. So, what?? Like, even now you prevail?? That is -Kutark-.
    Now you say, that in Sharia debate, I declared Vinoo, a winner. Totally wrong, go back to blog and I suggested Pervez,who was discussing with you, a winner. so be particular, what you are writing. You say, I do not understand you, how come?? and by the same token, you declare that, you understand me, perfectly well?? That is stretching belief a bit too far.
    So you think, that being right wing(?) rightists, is substantially inferior in your world view?? Who amongst us, rightists,are trying to implement, a Ramayanish, Hindu rajya in present India? Who?? which you abhore so much??
    I have never abused you. I have never attacked you, I have opposed you many a times, not attacked. Your language is suggesting- if you are not with me- you are against me. That is silly.
    As far as being liberal, all of us are more liberal than you. You speak in only-narebazi language. borrowing vested interests writing only, and trying to impress others. I am not that intellectual, I speak about the ground realities, which I see, perceive. You mostly quote, where is your input??, I mean personal input, which make me think that you have thought over this thing and may be it is in simple leftists view, it is your own.
    I have no interest in attacking, or threatening you. What for?? What any one will gain out of it??so leave this idea of me, threatening you.We are arm chair revolutionaries and will remain same.
    I can engage with original Ravi and not with Ravi, who speaks only in rhetorics of rightists and leftists.

    Ravi Reply:

    If describing the word I used is making a mince-meat out of it. I better go and equip myself with a dictionary. From that point on how could I loose an argument. All I have to do is describe it.

    Yes that is true you declared Parvez a winner, based on your evaluation that I was supporting Sharia and he was not. So suggest you follow your own advise and revisit the discussion and have a deep look and see if I was Supporting Sharia. Take the challenge and quote me where you think I supported Sharia. I will in return PUBLICALLY accept defeat.

    I have never ever implied or suggested that I understand you. I do not.

    Yes I do believe that the natural stance of Humanity is |Liberal and that Right-Wingism is an aberration and cancerous one at that. That is my considered view, take it or leave it.

    The Sangh Parivar is trying to create a Hindu Bharta by destroying secular India. Don’t believe me read a bit more.

    You attacked me many times. Remember once we discussed the geography of Ajmal Khan Road and came to the conclusion that both of at different times enjoyed the delights of Standard Burfi and Roshan De Chole Bhature. Before then and for some time after that you persistently referred to me as a PaKISTANI Muslim, masquerading under a Hindu Identity. If you do not call that abuse then what do you call it.

    I do quote. I also write substantially original posts as well. I have frequently have had philosophical discussions with Vinay 1 and Ashish. Did you not only a few weeks ago tried to excite others here to discuss one of my post, which you in your own words said written in immaculate English.

    I never suggested you threaten me. There are others here who do. I and I alone have been called a Paedophile and not one of you protested.

    Who you engage with and who not is entirely your choice.

Many a times, I have said that, it is important to have an opposite view as well, as it stimulate thinking.
    Now, let us, go to far far back of our interaction, as you have mentioned it.
    You started with me as CHAMAR- yOU ACCEPTED YOUR MISTAKE GRACEFULLY AND i LEFT IT AT THAT.
    i MIGHT HAVE CALLED YOU A pAKISTANI, INITIALLY, BECAUSE OF YOUR CONTENTS OF POST, WHICH TO( Sorry, capital lock was pressed) my mind, resembled more like a pakistani fundamentalists view, out here for mischief. I have stopped you addressing like that since years.
    May be Sangh parivaar is trying to create a Ram Rajya, I have nothing to do with RSS. I never supported them. Occasinally, I call my self Sanghi, like Mohan, but it has more like asserting our right to hold a rightist view. My rightist views are for economics and nothing to do with religion, as I am not a religious person.
    Yes, you write beutiful english, which I enjoy to read and I have complimented you several times for this.
    About others, abusing you,please tell me, how I can enforce my like and dislike on this blog. Do I ever write any post endorsing their language, never. Believe me, I was about to request others to tone down language, including your -jerking- cartoon, as it Mahol ko kharab karta hai.

    Sorry;
    Sharia debate was not touched. You never suggested to implement sharia or any other such thing. What you were saying that leave it to Muslims to tackel that. Now, as a Hindu, and not even an Indian, I will not go there to enforce any change in Sharia, have no right, but as opposed to you, Pervez was pleading for a proactive change and you were not proactive, on the contrary, you were discouraging him. He, very forcefully countered your arguments. it was an interesting debate and after about 8- 10 posts, I found that you have run out of arguments. At that point, I said, Pervez appear to have won this debate. Winning and losing here is just to add a zing to the debate, no, money, chair or perks are reward or nothing is taken from loser.

    Ravi Reply:

    My view was simple, if a community wishes to govern their family (civil) affairs within a code they believe in (Sharia as an example) then so long it does not infringe with our National laws, which take precedent, then I am happy for that community to enjoy that much autonomy. The essence of my argument is liberal and Sharia merely an example.

    Where as Parvez was attacking Sharia as it reminded him of backwardness.

    So my friend the two of us were not even arguing over the same topic. Likewise, the foreignsickly trained accountant kept insisting that I was Pro-Sharia, anti-women, etc etc.. That is from where Parvez took up the argument.

    I have no qualms about losing an argument, but at least the argument has to be on the same basis. Which in the case of “Sharia” argument it was not. I was talking about Human Rights and using Sharia purely as an example.

    I have no interest in Sharia, but I have all the interest in Human Rights.

    All those adjectives apply to him just the same. Come to think of it one can add Tarun Vijay to that list.

    The only thing I will withdraw is my smirk which I have as hear your squirm in my head.

    Not half as much as the words Fascist and Hindufatwadi.

    AshishC Reply:

    Ravi,
    in the words that a respected school teacher of mine directed to a fellow student: “You read a lot, but, I am afraid you do not understand”.
    I did say that Booker was richly deserved- in fact I have always maintained I hold her God of Small Things in high esteeem. Why are you labouring the point? Is it that, like Renuka Chaudhury today on TV, you have taken to writing from a script?
    I thought I understand English- when in doubt, with the help of a dictionary. Now, you introduced the word Luvy into the blog, I was perplexed- it is not a word I am familiar with. So, I went and looked it up in the urban dictionary. And, lo and behold- it seemed like-
    1. You were calling Ms Roy names.
    OR
    2. You used Luvy wrongly.
    While the 1st would indeed be delighful to speculate on, I think the 2nd is more likely. The heavens would not have fallen if you had conceded. But, like a cross between an ostrich and a mule, you carry on.
    And, I quite delight in being called a right wing hindoo fundoo.

    Ravi Reply:

    The only teacher I respected taught me Carpentry. He used to often ask me if I was flapping or flying. I am afraid had he been your teacher, your honest answer to him would have been “Sir I am flapping.”

    Now you know me well enough to know if I would have wrongly used a word or not. I would let you reconsider your position on that one.

    Had you made a genuine effort to know the word then you would have found it (all be it differently spelt) Oxford Dictionary, but in your eagerness to get even with me, you resorted to the Urban Dictionary.

    often derogatory an actor or actress, especially one who is particularly effusive or affected: it’s a rough deal for the poor luvvies being paid to watch movies and party

    The point you steadfastly refuse to concede, is that you have absolutely nothing what so ever on her, apart from your general dislike of lefty luvvies. Righty luvvies that I named appear to you as Gurudevs.

    Arundhati is regularly invited by media around the world (darlings of the media are also referred to as media luvvies), on the issue of Gang Rape alone she appeared on the US TV as well as UK Channel 4. That is because she is very articulate, opinionated, (word deliberately chosen rather than misused), and represents widely held values and views. The odd one out is you. My lablelling her luvy was in this context, even as it was mildly derogative.

    Hell would have frozen over had you conceded. When did you last concede anything.

    Your delight is your private matter, if the clothes of a right-wing Hindu Fundo fit you then wear them with pride.

    I am happy with being left of centre liberal.

    AshishC Reply:

    I do not quote others; except rarely in support of my views because I am confident they can stand on their own legs.

    Luvy, does not figure in OED online.
    Arundhati being invited by media worldwide- yeah, sure- there is an industry which delights in “aww shucks” view of India and she feeds it.
    Which of the many meanings of Luvy obtained from urban dictionary applied to her? Attention ***** is probably my favourite, but I will let you have the last word on that one.
    I just went through the epic battle that you waged with Pankaj in my absence. I will just say this: just because I don’t live on this blog, do not construe my absence as a concession. If you think you can respond to instances of deliberate and gross misrepresentation of facts (also known as lying in some circles) by your high priestesss of hyperbole by quoting her literary creds or indeed that she is a favourite of the “bleeding heart cocktail circuit”, then you have a ***** sense of logic or debating principles indeed.

    Ravi Reply:

    You not quoting others is being presented here as a virtue, I see a large dollop of unsubstantiated arrogance in it.

    I quote because I admire other peoples thought processes and their writing style.

    I used the word Luvy in its meaning of darling of the left and Media.

    As far as her lying, now that is about the biggest lie you have ever told. If she was lying then she would have been caught out by normal press and not Right-Wing Mavericks.

    I am open to you telling me what the truth is and how she lied. Merely saying that she lies provides a detailed view of your own prejudices.

    I have several scores to settle with Pankaj that have been festering under the surface for years. What that has to do with you fails me, with the exception of him deciding that by accessing the Urban Dictionary you made a mince meat out
    of me. More likely a fool out of your-self.

    What is it that I said, which may be construed as I think you ever concede? Not in your nature my friend. I do not seek any concessions.

    Your original argument was that she was being dismissive of mass protest by suggesting that the protest was because the victim was from middle-class. Since then I have read the same argument on many other blogs in TOI, First Post etc. It is worth repeating once again, the radical view is, this was a brutal rape, but one in many 100s that take place every year. To change that society has to change. I concur with this view point.

    The reactionary view is, OMG what a brutal rape, let us protest to stop this from happening and at the same time lets see if we can take a swipe at the Government. (you do this quite often).

    I rather have a bleeding heart, than a bleating heart full of empty jingoism that you seem to possess.

    It takes two to debate, your approach is best summed up as a points scoring exercise with each blow delivered with the intention of being a lethal blow.

    Two ladies who wept on TV were Jaya Bachchan and Shiela Dikshit. We respect their tears. But their tears have raised some questions and I think the two of them owe an answer to them as they are in public life.
    Would Jaya Bachchan continue to sit in the company of people like Amarmani Tripathi and Bhagwan Sharma (also known as Guddu Pandit) when she attends her Party meetings. And these are only two names which come to my mind and her party is full of many such more. If she keeps silent when she goes back to her party ..then we can only conclude that she performed a well rehearsed act on TV.
    Shiela Dikshit shall need to explain how the nexus between the Transport Department and the Transport Mafia. She has been the Chief Minister for 10 years and she cannot argue that she cannot be held responsible for that nexus. Anyone who has used public Transport in Delhi would now how the transport Department is hand in glove with the Dinesh Yadav’s of Delhi. Otherwise she is just as good as Jaya Bachchan in performing acts on TV.
