Some years ago, I was roofless, jobless and without a bean in the bank. I had relatives but I didn’t have family in the sense of ‘home is the place that when you have to go there, they have to let you in.’ I had a bunch of incidental domestic skills (I could run a nice home, keep a good table, grow a garden and maintain a fragrant linen cupboard, organize parties to the last detail).
