Click, and get going

The principle on which this blog is predicated is that I only recommend things over here. No book/author/website gets slagged off. Only good news is passed on. (You could argue that what that means is that I plug books I have` enjoyed reading or authors I admire, but I am happy to plead guilty as charged. I do my criticism elsewhere.) So here comes a bit of very good news. It will be of use only to people who live in Mumbai, I am afraid.

The British Council in Mumbai has put its staggering collection of books on the web, and has developed a magnificent online library. There are several membership plans. I became a member five days ago. The plan that I have allows me to borrow five books at a time, with no limit on the number of books I borrow in a year. It costs Rs 5,700, including a registration fee of Rs 300.

All the stuff can be done online. Once you have decided which plan suits you the most, and have registered and signed on, you can browse through the collection. List the books you want to borrow. Within 48 hours, they will be delivered to your home/office.

You can keep the books for as long as you like – or finish them overnight. Once you want to return them, go back to the website, and indicate when you’d want them to be picked up.

The library’s courier will turn up, and take back the books you had borrowed. You can then order again, and the titles will be dispatched to you. And on and on…

No fuss, no traffic, no hassles, only unlimited reading pleasure. What are you waiting for? Just click, and get going.
