Most Indian journalists have contempt for cheque-book journalism. We believe that it is entirely wrong to pay sources for information and regard those who do so as being beyond the pale.

Many — if not most — American journos have a similar attitude. Cheque-book journalism remains restricted to sleazy super-market tabloids who are content to pay, say Britney Spear’s hair-dresser a large sum of money for some story about Britney’s love life. Read more
