Media’s ‘Pak obsession’ worked to India’s advantage?

Now that the Obamas have left India, two questions might usefully be asked about the progress of their visit.

The first relates to Obama’s speech in Parliament. Indian officials say they were surprised to hear Obama deliver a sort of endorsement of India’s right to a permanent seat in the Security Council. The President also took a slightly more India-pleasing position on Pakistan during his speech to Parliament than he had earlier in his visit. Moreover, the joint statement issued by India and America at the end of the Obama trip called for Pakistan to take action against the perpetrators of 26/11. This was a big deal in diplomatic terms. It was as though the US was endorsing India’s claim that Pakistan was not doing enough to bring the 26/11 terrorists to justice.

There is no doubt that Obama told us more of what we wanted to hear at the end of his visit than he had at the start. Was this pre-planned? Was he building up to a Big Bang during the Parliament speech while playing down expectations earlier?

Or was there an element of course correction?

Without the benefit of inside information, we cannot say anything with certainty. But it does seem possible that the US President and his party, recognising that the trip was not going well, decided that they did not want it to end in failure. Hence, the attempt to please India and to say the things we wanted to hear.

For anyone with any knowledge of American politics, the idea of course correction is a reasonable one. American politicians are enormously sensitive to public opinion. Their actions are guided by regular opinion-research, by an examination of the media and by consistent monitoring of the Internet. Unlike Indian politicians who tend to make up their minds on policy issues and are reluctant to change course mid-way, American politicians are much more willing to correct the course and to chart a more popular path through a troubled region.

It is not outlandish to imagine the Obama team looking at the response and deciding that the President needed to say something that sounded more substantive. After all, when Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, visited India, he brought the nuclear deal with him. This President had nothing as substantive to offer. Could it be that he decided that India would not be satisfied with a bit of Presidential dancing and required something meatier to regard the trip as a success?

If this was indeed the case, then the Big Bang with which Obama ended his trip makes perfect sense. While much is read into his statement about Pakistan becoming a safe haven for terrorists, you could argue that he was merely re-stating the US position that Al Qaeda and Taliban elements were taking refuge in Pakistan. Similarly, the statement on the Security Council sounded dramatic but offered sufficient wriggle room because of the vagueness of the time frame and the lack of specifics about UN reform. Anyway, the US has already made a similar commitment about a permanent seat to Japan.

But because these statements sounded more dramatic than they may actually turn out to be, Obama ended his trip in a blaze of glory.

If you accept that the answer to the first question about whether there was a course question is yes, then a second question needs to be asked.

Did the media have anything to do with the change of tone in Obama’s statements?

By the end of Obama’s first day in India, sections of the media had got increasingly belligerent. There were complaints that the President was behaving like a travelling salesman and that his real interest was in pleasing the folks back home by promising them more jobs and economic benefits. Obama was not doing enough for India, many people said. Unlike Bush, he had nothing concrete to offer. He was too frightened of antagonising Pakistan to even name the country.

On the second day, when he delivered a long and rambling answer to a school-girl’s question about Pakistan, portraying it as a victim of terror, more voices in the media had joined in the protests. The general feeling was that the Obamas had failed to connect with the Indian people.

It was only on the last day that Obama won over India when he finally expressed some concerns about terrorism emanating from Pakistan and threw in a reference to the Security Council seat, no matter how vague these statements may seem on close examination.

So, here’s my question: did the Indian media actually help our country get what it needed? Did our belligerence serve to push Obama in the right direction? Many wise men complained that the media were needlessly obsessed with Pakistan. But did that obsession actually work to India’s advantage? Did Obama’s advisors, looking at the failure of the media to be impressed by his statements, decide that they had to pump up the volume and add a few more welcome riffs?

I have no idea what the answers to these questions are. But you have to concede that it seems like a plausible scenario. A Presidential visit appears to be in trouble because of negative media commentary and so, the President finally changes course.

In that case, should we stop asking our media to always be responsible and restrained? With an image-conscious US President, the media can often be more effective tools of change than the work of well-meaning diplomats.

    Vir,

I had the similar impression over 3 days. Media analysis and outcry helped India to hear what we wanted from US at first place.

Secondly, corrections happened along the way, however; I believe it is a sign of great leader in Obama who is personally convinced with India’s foreign policies and economic growth. He seemed more impressed after actually landing in India, experienced India first hand and was not happy with deliberate US attempts to stop India and its aspirations.

Moreover, we should not underestimate the personal influence Mr. Manmohan Singh weilds over Obama, I believe Obama trusts Mr. Singh’s knowledge and vision on global economics.

Mr Obama and Mr Cameron should convince Pakistan to give up on its headless Kashmir ambition. A China containment policy will not work until entire Kashmir is rightfully made a part of India (on the basis of the instrument of accession signed by the king of Kashmir) and thus eliminating Pakistan’s desire to have a border with China. Doing anything less would leave the door wide open for the Chinese to take a shortcut to access the warm waters of the Arabian sea. The Himalayas have stood the test of time. But if we simply sit idle until the Himalayan barrier is breached, that would be the time to write off the future of the world. An aberration of a two-century Anglosphere will be replaced by a sinocentric world for a very long time. The choice is ours to make, collectively.

We may have heard what we wanted to but all these things are very vague, it does not mean we will get concrete result out of it. Pakistan will still use terrorism as a state policy to deal with India no matter what Obama says in India. India will be still far form UN seat, Obama knows that It will not be enough if America supports India there will be many more players. I think India should have focused on more tangible things like technology transfer, Visa issues, opening up govt sector IT projects for Indian companies, cooperation between India scientific establishment and US govt in join R&D etc.
Instead India only focuses on Pakistan, it was a complete failure.

Despite Obama’s lying to the American public, no sales deals to India have been signed or will be signed because of what I have said below which is also responsible for his support of India’s permanent membership of the U.N. Security Council :-

    1) India’s njgger-slave, traitor service chiefs who are constantly talking of threats from India’s ‘neighbors’ must be shot on the spot. The United States is EVERYBODY’s neighbor. It has already invaded and occupied Afghanistan, a part of traditional India and will expand its occupation to the rest of the subcontinent.
Was Britain India’s neighbor? I am India’s expert in strategic defence and the father of India’s strategic program, including the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan means the coast-to-coast destruction of the U.S. by India; see my blog titled ‘Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.’ which can be found by a Yahoo search with the title for steps I have already taken for the nuclear destruction of New Delhi and then the coast-to-coast destruction of the U.S. and extermination of its population.
Russia and other white countries are U.S. allies. These are the enemies to destroy. All other enemies will be taken care of automatically.
Conventional arms are worthless for destroying the United Sates. Nuclear arms to destroy the United States with a FIRST STRIKE — this is the key — are cheap and easy to produce with technology India already has. Prepositioning by its special forces a couple of nuclear bombs in Washington and New York and letting the world know we have done so will give India freedom to test thermonuclear weapons designs, ICBMs, etc., as much as it wants, though India already has this freedom but for the njgger-slaves. Alternatively, twenty kiloton bombs can be prepositioned in the largest U.S. cities and then Washington and New York destroyed with the warning that additional U.S. cities will be destroyed if there is any retaliation. The nuclear destruction of New Delhi — without waiting — is all that is needed to make India win.

    2) I am India’s expert in strategic defence and the father of India’s strategic program including the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. In my blog titled ‘Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.’ which can be found by a Yahoo search with the title I wrote: The refusal by pieces of filth such as Advani to recognise the United States as India’s number one enemy is sustained by thousands of C.I.A.-RAW-inspired headlines in India’s media such as “Indian-American becomes Governor of Louisiana” which should instead say “Indian rewarded for conversion to Christianity with governorship: As reward for conversion to Christianity at age 18, as Americans themselves admit and his numerous published essays and articles on his conversion, Indian made Secretary of Louisiana’s Health and Hospitals at age 24, President of the University of Louisiana system at age 27, then Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services in Bush Administration, then member of U.S. Congress and now youngest Governor in U.S. at age 36″ (
Bobby Jindal: The Story They Don’t Want You to Read CenLamar: On Life in Louisiana ). Even more important are the thousands of headlines that are missing from India’s media, thanks to C.I.A.-RAW, the story they really don’t want anyone to know, saying “India’s greatest scientist and greatest living Indian publicly tortured in Harvard seminar, systematically and totally starved for up to 3 weeks at a time, made semi-starved and homeless and even blind for years, kept under 24-hour audio and video surveillance as well as surveillance of communications and electrical typewriter and computer use, document creation and photocopying, etc., by satellite for more than past 3 decades, systematically harassed and in poverty and neutralised and robbed of his work at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars per year, robbed of crores in his money and property in India by C.I.A.-RAW, forced back into exile in the U.S., all with full cooperation and participation of India’s RAW and India’s C.I.A.-RAW-controlled prime ministers, politicians and media — to keep India poor, weak and enslaved: The most intelligent, most handsome man on Earth, a living Incarnation, plans nuclear supremacy for India in near future, to destroy India’s number one enemy, the United States, with ten thousand nuclear-armed missiles and will machine gun and bulldoze into trenches all traitors who stand in the way.” Since then I have said they will be destroyed in the nuclear destruction of New Delhi; see my blog.

I thought ‘Pakistani terror stink’ was raised by BJP spokesperson Rudy who was slammed by liberal media. Now when Obama mentioned ‘Pakistani terror’, media is trying to take the credit for it.

If a valid issue is raised by BJP (or opposition), media acts as congress mouthpiece and slams the opposition FOR CONGRESS but if there is effect of opposition voice, media takes the credit or gives the credit to Congress and Dynasty.

Can opposition take credit for exit of Chavan and Kalmadi or media is going to give this credit to Sonia or credit itself?

Our media should understand that it is suppose to work with opposition to keep Govt. in check but our media is busy hobnobbing with govt and putting opposition on mat at every given opportunity.

I dont think Media played a role in Obama’s decisions or speech during his visit to India. He already had in mind what he would say and do and the kind of man he is, I dont think he can be swayed by media.

1.Obama Stayed in Taj Hotel and had already planned to meet the victim’s families of Pakistan’s 26/11 attacks on Mumbai. He is wise enough to know India’s sensitivities when it comes to 26/11 terror attacks. It was good gesture on his part and slap on the face of those who just want to argue away 26/11. It is not going to go away.

    2. He announced further relaxation of sanctions on dual use items export to India and removed 2 very critical entities ISRO and DRDO from the list. It is significant.

    3. His support for UNSC membership for India came as a surprise but this was the headlines in the international media. It is huge victory for India’s diplomacy.
    4. He did not utter a single word about Kashmir and clearly mentioned that Pakistan’s progress on anti terror front is too slow.

For Pakistan it is a decisive blow. They firmly believed that a Democratic Barrack Hussein Obama will be better than republican George Bush for them but they are extremely disappointed. The Spin masters are working overtime in Pakistan to interpret different meaning of everything. What happened is exactly opposite to what they wanted to happen- No mention of Kashmir and Support fot India’s UN bid.

It was indeed a very special visit for both the countries. Obama can claim creation of thousands of jobs in US while India got what it wanted.

That we have bagged a great advantage out of the Obama visit is a pathetic myth. The American president is in a desperate situation at home. He is progressively losing his popularity. He has lost the congressional( House) majority of his party. His mojo seems to have disappeared altogether. His Asian trip is thus a convenient diversion .Above all,he has not said anything specific or categorical to the advantage of India vis-a-vis Pakistan.Much is of course made of his support for India for the U.N security Council seat .That is however too far away and too uncertain and Obama may not last in the White House beyond 2012.India therefore stands on its own feet. That is what is good about India,Obama or no Obama.

Our Media rightly slammed President Obama for his silence on Pakistan as India was hoping for active support. Just before leaving America, US had released a stream of latest technically advanced armaments to Pakistan, which Indians feel would strengthen Pakistan and these armaments would be used against India. Our Prime Minister should have openly expressed India’s concern.
Obama’s silence about a permanent seat on UNSC for India too was alarming despite India’s well known stand on this issue. India had cut off the Gas line project with Iran at the behest of US and cooled its relations with long time friend Iran. We should have asked for an America’s commitment of support for our seat on UNSC before scumbing to US Pressure. If US is not willing to openly support India and continues supporting Pakistan then where is the strategc partnership?.
China has come out with a statement opposing President Obama’s belated and half hearted support for India’s claim to UNSC Seat, which is in line with Pakistan’s objection. Our expectation that America will move towards India is futile. America is and will remain with its allay Pakistan. Pakistan was the intermediary in bringing America closer to China and in arranging the meeting between American foreign affairs Secretary of State and China. Pakistan will keep milking America and strengthening itself and China will continuing supplying the armaments to Pakistan.
India has to be very watchful of America, China and Pakistan. China treats Pakistan like America treats Israel. India does not have to toe America’s line. Our relationship with reliable Russia should be further developed. India should also place its orders for military hardware with France.

Course correction has been very evident. Obama is a great orator! Words cost nothing, but he is skilled at using them appropriately to buy what he wants. He skillfully poured fine dust into the eyes of American Electorate, and won the Presidency. Thereafter, he did not deliver on anything that he had promised his country. Here, Indians of different hues are congratulating themselves for a job well done, in extracting all kind of assurances from President Obama, which sounded nice. Are Indians naive, or do they find advantages in Ostrich – like burying head in sand? Where Obama has totally failed to deliver on his assurances to his own nation, why should he labour on vague assurances given to India. UNSC or NSG membership carrot is not bound by any time frame, but he has already carried home 50,000 jobs.
By all means the media, the Politician, and the Business community merit congratulations, but only after the assurances have been translated into hard fact. Till then, there is no call for trying to take credit for maneuvering Obama into artfully pulling the wool over our eyes.

Media always want to take credit. Before Obama’s visit they kept cribing about it won’t be a successful visit and we are not getting visa, blah blah blah. Now as the visit is successful they want to take credit of it. What if Obama did not mention UNSC and Pakistan, then all fault would have been of the government and in particular Prime Minister. Why do we forget the unscheduled close door meeting Dr. Manmohan Singh had with Obama at his residence? Let’s give the credit to who deserve.
I am not opposed to media but these days media has become too much commercial and whoever pays more they start speaking the language of that party. Media today is not constructive. Take an example of Babari Masjit verdict day. Just before the verdict day they tried to make sure that enough panic is created in the people, but when nothing happened on the verdict day, there were talk shows held on news channels trying to instigate people to do something about this verdict, why? because they did not get chance to increase their TRPs by showing riots and dying people on the news.
Obama supporting UNSC permanent seat and mentioning Pakistan in his speech, does not mean anything. I am not sure why we Indians always compare everything with Pakistan and need big daddy like USA to say something against Pakistan. Their terming Pakistan as terror sponsering nation or not does not rule out that Pakistan is the terror factory supplying terror to all parts of the world. Obama may be there only for 2 more years and then what? So why to give so much importance. The biggest challenge in front of USA is not terrorism but the economic crisis and we know (and they know) very well that they can not come out of this crisis without India’s help and that’s what we should focus on and move forward.

Unless it translates into effective policy, which would accrue to the media a huge credit, we can take this success only at its face value. Over the last 3 days, it was evident that much water is being tested by the aides of the US President. Our membership at the US Security Council too would be time-tested by the US – if we go along with the US on all issues of its immediate concern, then we are sure to get it – otherwise no – for Germany and Japan are going to go after it while currying flavour with the US.

    dear vir
you give more credit to the indian media than is due to it. I watched India’s most boring channel, NDTV, throughout the Obama visit. Barkha’s and later, Prannoy’s extended family led by Shekhar Gupta, Bhalla and others made merry talking about all those serious things you have also raised. But there was no substance. No point of view. Why?
The problem is the Indian media today is a headless chicken. The bosses are carrion for anyone who gives them a padmashree or calls them to dinner at rashtrapati bhavan. They portray themselves as india’s public sphere. They represent neither India nor its media, forget about policies and such other things. They are essentially narcissistic who think the people of India have no brains and therefore need to be told what to think and how to. More often than not, as the Obama visit suggests, the Indian media is too much in awe of the visitors to be able to think clearly and lead a campaign, either for or against the visitor.
You have moved in these circles. I have too. And you do know the crassness that grows inside newsrooms. The media in India has to move away from talkign to itself, hearing itself, and shoo away the extended families if it not to be laughed at. Reporting on politics, home and foreign affairs is a dead art in India. Mere rendition of facts and throwing names is not analysis or agenda-setting.
