Reform Man returns

Sachin may be wobbly, but Manmohan’s found his form
The silent man is speaking with a new dose of reform
Underachiever, they called him, may now change their tune
as he bats on in an innings that began in a long-lost June

FDI in retail, and then some in aviation
may not quite cheer a corruption-scarred nation
Diesel will cost more, and cooking gas is dearer:
this is not the stuff you do when elections come nearer

Kingfisher may fly, foreign ballast in wings
Wal-Mart may become now the God of our Small Things
The Sensex will zoom like a rocket, powered by US funds
But we do not quite know what really it portends

If the market’s a funny place, elections are funnier
Diesel may make you cloudy, but NREGA sunnier
Allies will be angry, the opposition will scream
Everybody’s got his own take on the Great Indian Dream

DMK may stage a walkout, Mamata may pull the plug
Some other little ally, may go down and pull the rug
Has the reformer PM lost it in his reformist zeal?
Has this economics thing clouded his political feel?

Not to worry, I say; the ballot’s far away
Twenty-fourteen gives room for risky shots to play
So Sachin he may not be, our soft-spoken leader
He’s got plenty of time to bat, note this gentle reader
