Given the traditional five-year itch to change governments in the land of five rivers, Punjab should have been a cakewalk for the Congress in the 2012 Assembly elections. Notwithstanding the charismatic royal arrogance of Congress’ chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh, the Congress had anti-incumbency against the ruling SAD-BJP combine working in its favour. Besides, the Punjabis were apparently tired of the autocratic Badals and their kin ruling the state with an iron hand.
