Given the traditional five-year itch to change governments in the land of five rivers, Punjab should have been a cakewalk for the Congress in the 2012 Assembly elections. Notwithstanding the charismatic royal arrogance of Congress’ chief ministerial candidate Captain Amarinder Singh, the Congress had anti-incumbency against the ruling SAD-BJP combine working in its favour. Besides, the Punjabis were apparently tired of the autocratic Badals and their kin ruling the state with an iron hand. To add to the woes of the ruling combine, junior partner BJP initially could not get their act together and had no hope in hell to repeat their phenomenal 19 seat performance in the 2007 elections.
