A motley collection of things to see and read

Today’s post is about a motley collection of things that I want you to see and read.

Starting with this amazing photo essay of a journey down the Jordan river from the BBC website.

If you’ve ever thought of stringing together your collection of photos from a trip into a photo essay, let this be your inspiration. It looks at what’s in the photo and even what’s not in it, a wealth of information and reportage going into creating beautiful, tightly written captions that are like a designer frame to a painter’s masterpiece – making the work shine forth in its glory.

Next is this piece on cupcakes written by Anna Sussman, who’s written for Away & Beyond as well.

Why am I making you read this? Because I think it’s a great piece of writing. You might think it’s just the story of the growing popularity of cupcakes in the Middle East, but really, it’s also about a people and a place and the sociological changes they’re going through. I always tell our freelancers that sometimes a simple thing like an evening spent at a coffee shop in a square in Florence can be the perfect lens for telling the story of the city. This is a perfect demonstration of that.

Planning a holiday and seen it all? Want somewhere that’s exciting and has a bit of culture too? Check out this National Geographic list of obscure World heritage Sites that you haven’t heard of.

If nothing else, go ogle over the picture!

Continuing on the photo trend, if you need inspiration, look no further than this page.

There is no lack of things to be inspired by here, from the clear blue of the water, to the magnificence of the surf, and the sheer audacity of the surfer who’s just a second ahead of being walloped completely by that grand wave. Simply breath-taking.

On to the wildlife. Everyday we hear of a new species that is threatened or near extinction. In times like this, news of the discovery a new species is rather heart

warming. Plus there’s the awe-inspiring realisation that there is still SO much in this world that we don’t know about, and learn everyday.

Go see, these underwater creatures are very pretty.

There’s another bit of wildlife that I’m not particularly too fond of, though they seem to love me. Yes, mosquitoes! If, like me, you’re one of those people who’s always getting bitten, while everyone else sits around enjoying the evening outdoors and can never travel without a tube or two of mosquito repellent, here’s something to feel good about.
