The Power Of Three

What’s common between Dudley Moore, The Jam, The Cure and Nirvana? Moore, many of us will remember, was the British actor and comedian who starred in the 1979 film, 10, with (and many of us are more likely to remember her) the stunning Bo Derek.

Girl In a Coma is a rock band from San Antonio, Texas.

'Girl In a Coma' is a rock band from San Antonio, Texas.

But Moore was also a musician, an accomplished jazz pianist and composer who had a band called The Dudley Moore Trio. Trio. That’s what’s common between Moore, The Jam, The Cure and Nirvana – all of them bands that were primarily three-member outfits.

Over much of last week I have been listening to trios, bands that have three members and more particularly, rock bands where there’s a lead guitarist, a bassist and a drummer, with one of them also singing. It all began with a version of Spank Thru by Nirvana from a 1989 session on BBC1 with the legendary DJ John Peel.

Trios (or power trios as they’re sometimes called) usually do away with rhythm guitars and keyboards and tend to lay a lot of emphasis on solos by each of the three musicians in the band. In the 1960s, the biggest trios included the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, which was led by Eric Clapton.

But later, there were many bands that had three instrumentalists but added a fourth standalone vocalist who only sang but never played any instrument of consequence. Thus, The Who had Roger Daltrey as the singer plus a trio, Queen had Freddie Mercury and three musicians. So did Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant plus the three others). Many later bands followed this model too – Sex Pistols and the Ramones, Motorhead and the Grand Funk Railroad.

But last week, along with revisiting music by The Jam, The Cure and The Nirvana-bands that are long gone- I also discovered some new trios. Girl In A Coma is band from Texas and take their name from a song by The Smiths (Girlfriend In A Coma), Made up by two sisters, Nina (lead guitar and vocals) and Phanie Diaz (drums), and Jenn Alva (bass), Girl In A Coma were called by Morrissey in 2007 to open for some of his shows.

North Mississippi Allstars Keep The Devil Down.

North Mississippi Allstars' 'Keep The Devil Down'.

They have one album, Both Before I Am Gone, and their appearance at the 2007 SXSW (South by South West) Festival got them some critical buzz and a growing number of fans. Like their name, The Smiths or rather Morrissey’s style of songwriting too influences their music. You can’t say the same thing about Boris.

The curiously named trio is a Japanese band sometimes also known (more curiously) as Fangs Anal Satan. Boris are the ultimate experimenters, genre-hopping with reckless abandon, they’ve played everything from metal to psychedelic rock to punk and even ambient music. They’re not new either, having been formed in 1992. Listening to their albums (there are over 15 full-length ones) is like dipping into a miscellaneous bin at a music shop. You’d never guess what’s in store for your ears.

More predictable and less adventurous are another trio (and like Girl In A Coma, they’re also from Texas), the Los Lonely Boys. Three brothers make up the band-Henry, Jojo and Ringo (yes, he plays the drums!) Garza-and they play a genre that they call Texican rock ‘n roll, melding Tejano (Spanish-Texan) music with rock, country, soul and blues.

One of my favourite rock trios are the North Mississippi Allstars, a band, as the name suggests, from Mississippi. Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew do blues-rock and after I first heard them, I’ve obsessively gone and collected seven of their albums and am dying to lay my hands on their most recent release, Do It Like We Used To Do, which I believe has two CDs and a live DVD.

The other trio that I discovered only last week are post-punkers from Baltimore who call themselves Double Dagger. Nothing really prepared me for their sound. They’re a lead guitar-less trio-drums, a very, very loud bass and vocals. Double Dagger has been around since 2002 and have played with acts like Pere Ubu
(American experimental rockers) and The Buzzcocks (British punk band), neither of whom are a trio. Double Dagger has three albums out and I’m on a mission to get them all. Any help will be appreciated!

    Respected Editor and Readers !
    Good Morning from Kathmandu !
Yes !I think- there are so many problems that there
will be no the consensus to complete the peace process and the writing of a
constitution among the parties. Another major sticking point is how to
integrate thousands of Maoist fighters housed in camps since the nation’s civil
war ended in 2006. A proposal to integrate them into the Nepal Army will be
    failed because Nepal’s
Army officers do not want integration of such Maoist’s -ism trained
workers. Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, known as a so-called qualified and confused writer
    seems extremely controversial.
    Nowhere in the world,
would a country be able to protect its sovereignty by making the national army
weak and powerless? The national army can’t compare with Maoist’s army. Now, in
    Nepal,
we have two kinds of army- the national army and the Maoist’s army. Can we
imagine two kinds of army in a country?

The creator of the Maoist rebellion was Girija.
After 1992, in the name of annihilating Masal-Communists (later called the
Maoists) murder, suppression, and rape crossed the limit. In revenge, Maoists
systematically killed thousands of civilians, police and army personnel.
Millions worth of physical infrastructures were destroyed or burned. And since
2005, Girija (leader of NC) joined hands with the Maoists. JNU Prof -S.D.Muni,
the strategist of RAW had given the 12-point anti-Nepal agendas of the
Republic, Secularism and Federal states to the perverted leaders of the parties
and a few lawyers, doctors, and journalists to end the existence of Nepal.

The Maoists are using their agendas and are
opening a ‘Pandora’s Box’- a one-party communist anarchism. The Maoist Party
has own army. It is a big conspirator that the Maoist fighters(Co-called army) almost have joined with the New Mohan Baidha Maoist’s party and Baburam Bhattarai. There are may be only 6-8 hundreds fighter can join in Nepal army. It may be to disturb Nepal army’s secrecy. So, it is not believable that the Maoists are supporting the democratic peaceful sense.
I am sorry to write that it was a great blunder
of Indian diplomats- Shyam Saran- former Indian ambassador and former foreign
Secretary of India (who is widely credited with bringing the present
instability in Nepal), and Sive Shankar Mukharejee, former foreign minister, KB
Rajan- former Indian ambassador Rakesh Sood- former ambassador, Prof.SD Muni
(RAW strategist) and other officials who not only blundered in their assessment
of the Maoists but also did much harm to Indian’s interests in Nepal. Among diplomats,
Shyam Saran is a very ambitious diplomat who could not calculate the good
    result.

Due to the Indian diplomats’ mistakes and the result became bad for India also. Now all the agendas of Democratic System are in risk. The intention of Maoist is to
create one party communist regime. The Maoist never supports constitutional
    democratic system in Nepal
including India. Then, we should find the solution to save Nepal-
constitutionally. The 1990 Constitution was not abolished in a appropriate constitutional
manner. The 1990 Constitution should implement with monarchy to provide a
momentum for the nation. This is the point of solution. Nor China comes
with Communism for its security. We must remain alert from foreign conspiracy
and suicidal activities of despicable leaders. It is high time we sacrifice in
name of country by joining shoulder to shoulder with the national army,
security organs and patriotic Nepali people with the King. It is the compulsion of Nepal and India.

    Thank you.

Is it in the interests of the common man, the citizens of Nepal, that the ones in power, debating in Kathmandu, cannot agree to form a constitution for 6 years?!?!
People are around who suffer with no power or even the basic feature of a decent road to a hospital; inflation is at a high…the list can go on!

There are two kinds of people who are always satisfied.

    One:
Who are on top of the things that is happening around and keep track of whats happening and whats expected.
    Two:
Who are totally ignorant, so, nothing to care about and are thus blissful even if he/she is to be sacrificed like a goat!

What signs Congress/UPA has shown in last 5 years that it indeed belongs to category one?

People are not so foolish like the blogger here to reach a wiser conclusion!

    Last but not the least:
To be a good spin doctor one require more then enough skill: first to cover up the real truth then put their own false viewpoint on top of the truth so the truth is kept hidden from the public! One would have expected simply acknowledge one’s mistake and move from there would have been simplest and best thing to do! Did not they said honesty is the best policy? Well, there is another saying: A donkey will always has to muddy the water before drinking it!
