Ab tera kya hoga Kaliya?
If you don’t know where that particular dialogue is from, you have no business reading this blog! With dialogues in Hindi films becoming more natural these days, we no longer have those dhamakedaar lines which made audiences clap and whistle and which eventually entered the urban lexicon and became part of our everyday conversation. I was trying to remember some of them the other day and this is what I came up with:
Sholay is of course the king when it comes to dialogues, specially Gabbar’s:
Kitne aadmi the?
Arre O Samba! (memorably used as a headline by a Mumbai tabloid during the football world cup when Brazil was playing)
Yeh haath hum ko de de Thakur
Jo dar gaya samjho mar gaya
Ab goli kha
Thakur ne hijron ki fauj banayi hai
Then there was Dharmendra: Basanti, in kutton ke saamne mat naachna (often recited by friends when someone has been asked to do something undesirable by his/her boss)
And Amitabh: Tumhara naam kya hai, Basanti?
And Asrani: Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain!
And Basanti:
Chal Dhanno, aaj Basanti ki izzat ka sawal hai
Yun ke mujhe befazool baat karne ki aadat to hai nahin
And then there are all those Amitabh movies…
Deewar:
Shashi Kapoor: Mere paas maa hai (quoted more often than there are seconds in a year, I think)
Amitabh Bachchan: Khush to bahut hoge tum
Main aaj bhi pheke hue paise nahin uthata
Don:
Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai
Gyarah mulkon ki police Don ko dhoond rahi hai (as Farhan Akhtar said on his show, Oye It’s Friday: “Why only gyarah mulk? Why not terah or satrah? Or saath?” And Shah Rukh added: “Ek do satellite aur ek do planets bhi add kar do!”)
Shahenshah:
Rishte mein to hum tumhare baap lagte hain, naam hai Shahenshah
Agneepath:
Pura naam Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, baap ka naam Dinanath Chauhan, maa ka naam Suhasini Chauhan, gaon Mandwa, umar chattis saal
(Amitabh recites his film dialogues at his shows all the time, and – at least in the ones I’ve seen on TV – they’re always a big hit. And interestingly, lots of really young people in the audience also seem to know most of them).!”)
Then there was Raaj Kumar with his “jaani” dialogues delivered in his trademark drawl. There’s that famous dialogue from Waqt: Chinoy seth, jinke ghar sheeshe ke hon, woh doosron par patthar nahin phenkte (I know, there’s no “jaani” in this one, but I can’t remember any specific “jaani” dialogue. I think he just used it as a prefix every time he spoke on screen).
Rajesh Khanna in Amar Prem: Pushpa, I hate tears (when Sharmila Tagore starts weeping, which she does quite a lot it the movie). And Shah Rukh Khan’s “I love you K-k-k-Kiran” in Darr (he made the stammer sound quite sinister)
And one of the best ever – Ajit with his Raabert and Mona darling dialogues. I’m not putting any here because I keep confusing them with the jokes. Which is real and which one is the joke – the lines have really blurred!
‘Mogambo khush hua” from Mr India.
So yes, films have become better and more polished and more natural, but it would be fun if there were a few creative dialogues even now – for instance, in the comedy films we have these days. Of course the movie has to become a hit (at least) or, better still (as in the case of Sholay or Deewar) a cult film, for the dialogues to seep into our subconscious.
Hindustan Times

Even I cannot remember any of Raj Kumar’s Jaani dialogues!
I think it is a bit like ‘Elementary, my dear Watson’. ‘Elementary’ and ‘My dear Watson’ have both been said by Holmes several times but never together!
Also, some of the newer films also have several lines (while not bombastic) that have passed into popular parlance. In Dil Chahta Hain, ‘cake khane ke liye hum kahin bhi pahuch jaate hain’ is one such.
Again from Andaz Apna apna, ‘yeh to kachcha khiladi lagta hain’ is the staple line to say when somebody goofs up on something simple!

Dialogues are sometimes the high point of the movie…I remember when I was a kid people used to go to theatres just to listen nana patekar’s dialogues..like krantiveer;)..thats y i guessa nicely made movies like khamoshi flopped ..because nana didnt speak a word in it…:)
I think most of the dialogues from Jab we met would qualify. Also, I think post nineties mostly romantic dialogues are remembered..
Like DDLJ: “bade bade deshon main, aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain..senorita..”
also, hum aapke hain kaun, kuch kuch hota hai, than Devdas..but that was a remake…Shahrukh somehow has a fair share of good dialogues..swades is a n excellent(though not popular) example..

too hilarious!!!!!

well, we have some other dialogues from SRK films as well, when somebody fails in love we say, yeh zaroori nahi ki woh bhi mujhse pyaar karein, main chahta hu woh jahan bhi rahein khush rahein, and how can we forget nowadays we are probably talking in Jab We met language, like tum toh bade hi ameer nikle yaar, aur main khud ki fav hoon. And dil chahta hain dialogues are always on everybodys mind as perfection ko kaisey improve kiya ja sakta hain ya phir usne teri khuddari ko lalkara hain yaar, kya kar raha hain, mard ban, be a man. And any Rahul will say hi I am Rahul naam toh suna hi hoga etc etc. its a long list but what I have noticed is people are talking in filmy language only. What say Poonam ji?

i wouldn’t say we’re talking in “filmy language.” I think these lines have become part of our vocabulary now. If someone says Kitne aadmi the? to me, he knows I know exactly what he’s saying, what the reference is to. It’s like a shared cultural language — i love it!

I remember one “Jaani” dialogue from waqt, but not sure about it, correct me if I am wrong:
“jaani, yeh bachchon ke khelne ki cheez nahin, haath cut jaaye to khoon nikal jaata hai”
Andaz apna apna is a cult movie, I suppose:
1) Mogembo ka bhatija: ” aankhen nikaal kar gotiyan khelunga”, “Aaya hoon kuch to loot kar jaaonga”
2) “Aap purush nahin……. mahapurush hain”
and so was “Hera pheri”
1) “Kabira speaking …. kaafi achcha naam hai” — spoken with inimitable style
2) “Tu ram hai, shyam hai ya koi sa bhi aam hai”
Anand was quite good:
1) “Aye, Babu moshay”
and finally
“Hey mogembo”

for jaani dialogue…there is a famous one..’jaani..yeh chaaku hai chaaku..bachon ki khelne ki cheez nahi..haath lagaoge toh khoon nikal jaata hai…hmmmm’
andaz apna apna had some memorable ones..
‘aap purush nahi..maha purush hai’
‘muscle dekha hai muscle..mussle ke rakh doonga’
‘ek hi pyaali se chai peene se pyaar badhta hai’
‘mein crimemaster gogo..mogambo ka bhatija..aaya hu toh kuch loot ke jaunga’
‘aankhen nikaal kar gotiyan khelunga’
’sabaash mere cheete’
and many more…it was one hell of a great movie!
then there is JAb we Met
‘mein apni sabse favourite hoon’
‘angry young man…aaj khush toh bahut honge tum ..hain..’(delivered in a heavy comical baritone by kareena! :-)) )
‘hamari umar mein dekh kar pata chal jaata hai ki ladka n ladki ke beech kya chal raha hai’
‘pet koi bomb hai jo phat jayega..hamare yahan elastic ke hote hai..’
DCH was a fab movie..in terms of one liners..
‘be a man ..mard ban’ wala dialogue! great!
‘toh kya mujhe roz roz takiye par bethne ka shauk hai’ (saif after his return from goa)
‘mujhe aisi ladki chahiye jo jyada emtnl -wemtnl na ho..khudh jiye n mujhe jeene de’
‘perfection ko kaisey improve kiya ja sakta hain’
‘kya hua..koi mar gaya?’
there are many more great dialogues from even today’s movies..
but yeah there was strong melodrama is previous era’s movies..esp the amitabh bachan/dev anand ones!

Mumbai ka king kaun - Bhiku Mhatre.
Saali German made hain! (referring to a gun that Bhiku gives to Satya)
In the movie Page 3
Sir sir ek ladki hain role ke liye perfect hain, blah blah blah
Editor - Degi kya??
In the movie RDB
College ke gate ke is paar hum zindagi ko nachaate hain, aur us paar zindagi hamein nachaati hain

but all time classics have been majorly delivered by amitabh…
be it mere pass gaadi hai bangla hai paisa hai..kya hai tumhare pass…mere pass maa hai..(shashi kapoor voice is still so clear in my mind..abslute classic moment!!)
or jao pehle us aadmi ka sign leke aao jisne mere haath par likha tha ki mera baap chor hai..fir mere bhai tum jahan kahoge mein wahan sign karne ko taiyaar hu..
or ..hum jahan khade hote hai..line wahin se shuru hoti hai (cant remembr if it was deewar/coolie..) then agneepath..mohabatein..cheeni kum..and his many many verses which he wud orate on KBCs..they were a pleasure! even in a program like bigg boss..when AB starts sayin smthng philosophical..u cant take away ur eyes/ears at that time from him!
he sure knoww how to mouth the dialogues so as to make them memorable forever!

It would certainly be good to have those dhamakedaar dialogues.Gone are those days when the audience whistled and cheered at the entry of the superhero, esp Amitabh, drawling with that superb tone of his. These days the makers are more attuned to spontaneity. These kind of dialogues would seem to look out of place. But the revival of the trend wouldn’t be a bad idea. The so called dhamakedaar dialogues could certainly prove to be crowd pullers. You never know !!

A few more:
Paresh Rawal in Hangama:
“B.A. kiya hai, M.A. kiya hai, SSC nahi kiya?”
Paresh in Awara pagal deewana:
“Isko bol ke idhar se kachra uthaye…warna”
Akshay: “warna..warna kya kar lega tu?”
“Main bol deta hooon mujhe ek baar gussa aa gaya na…gussa aa gaya na…to thanda bhi fatafat ho jata hai”
Another one from APD:
When Paresh meets Chhota chhatri
“Dekh bhai tadpatri”
“Ehhh, mera naam chhota chhatri hai chhota chhatri”
“Haan to uska kya?”
“Arrey abhi tune bola na tadpatri”
“Main kyu tadpatri bolunga?”
“Arrey tujhe laga ke mera naam hai”
“Kya tera naam hai?”
(screaming)”Tadpatri”
“Lekin abhi tune bola na tera naam chhota chhatri hai”
“Arrey tune bola na to maine bhi bola”
“Dekh bhai koi kuch bhi bole tu apna naam change mat kar…wo wohi rakh..yaha pe problem hoti hai..tu samajh gaya na kaju katli?”
Paresh in Hera pheri:
“Kyu fasa ke rakha hai mere ko in dono ke chakkar mein…Utha le re baba..Utha le…mere ko nahi…in dono ko utha le”
Another one
“Aye Raju, tu samjha na ye shyam bolta hai kisi ka naam nahi lene ka!”
Paresh in Andaz apna apna:
“Main teja hu, mark idhar hai”
“Amar-prem, Pavitrya aur bhakti-ras se bharpur, tumhare naam sunte hi mujhe andaja aa gaya tha ke tum filmi aur awara kism ke ladke ho…but now…tum to nikamme aur nithalle bhi ho…and then…shakal se to jahil aur murkh dikhate hi ho…and ofcourse…apne aap ko aval darje ke bewkoof sabit kar chuke jab ye soch ke aaye the ki main apane betiyon ki shaadiyon ke liye tumhe haan kaar dunga….wait…mere 3 minute abhi poore nahi hue….mere betiyon ko maine bade pyar se pala hai…lekin mujhe lagta hai unke dimag ka jaldi se ilaz karana hoga kyoki tum jaise khacharonko pasand kiya hai…ungali niche aur tum kamarese bahar…out”
Few more from AAA:

“Aapko kaise pata?”
“Wo bhi chashmish, ye bhi chashmish, dono chashmish”
“Uss hisaab se to aapko unka baap hona chahiye”

Well, if we are talking about dialogues and that too famous ones, how could we forget to mention a few from the movie Kaminey. As far as I remember the ‘haklu’ and ‘totlu’ twins had more than a few witty dialogues:
“Ab kahan gayi tumhari….s..s..s…s… (to which Priyanka helps with a few words…and finally Guddu says) Science…..Kahan gayi tumhari Hh…Hh….Home Science”.
“Maine to do saal se uski fakal bhi nahi dekhi”
Priyanka - “To kya rape kiya maine tumhara” (not noteworthy of remembrance but goes well with the situation
But Cinema around the world is known as much for their stories as the words which make them timeless and unforgettable
“As-ta-la-vista… baby’

1 recent film that has become famous for its dialogues (among other things) is Kaminey the whole ‘S’ ko ‘F’ bolna is a trend now.
also Kuch Kuch Hota Hai : ‘Pyaar dosti hai’ and ‘Hum 1 baar jeete hain, 1 baar marte hain aur 1 baar pyaar karte hain…something like that
One of the most famous lines from AAA: ‘Teja main hoon, mark idhar hai’ and ‘ye teja teja kya hai, ye teja teja?’
Also Om Shanti Om had great dialogues, maybe bcoz it was modelled on films of the seventies : ‘1 chutki sindoor…’ ‘Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’
