Voices from Pakistan

With Pakistan in the midst of turmoil, it’s interesting to read some of the blogs by Pakistanis. On The Dawn blog, Musadiq Sanwal followed the lawyers’ Long March and blogged everyday till Day Five, when Zardari relented and resinstated Iftikhar Chaudhry as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. His blog provides details of what he saw unfolding during the event, including how he spotted a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) flag inside the Chief Justice’s house after victorious crowds thronged the place.

Amidst the exultation, there are those who strike a more sober note. On Five Rupees, a blog run by a bunch of writers, Ahsan writes about what would make him trust Nawaz Sharif, a witty piece that wistfully wonders whether Sharif will change for the better.

Then there’s Haq’s Musings where Riaz Haq wonders how long President Zardari will last. You can follow Haq on Twitter too, if you like.

On Pak Tea House, there’s not only posts on political developements but also stories on subjects like Pakistan’s booming sex industry. Pak Tea House calls itself a blog-zine, which “is a little corner in the blogosphere that will endeavour to revive the culture of debate, pluralism and tolerance. It has no pretensions nor illusions but the motivation of a few people who want to see Pakistan a better place - where ideas need to counter the forces of commercialism, adverse effects of globalisation and extremism. And, ideas must translate into action that leads us to an equitable, just and healthy society”. Founded by freelance writer Raza Rumi, Pak Tea House is a bustling website with contributions from bloggers as well as links to the international press.

Visit Pakistaniat for “all things Pakistani”, a blog by Boston-based Pakistani  author and academiic, Adil Najam for his take on what is happening in Pakistan.

And, to explore more Pakistani blogs, check out the metablog, Pakistani Bloggers, where posts from across the Pakistani blogosphere are showcased.

Apart from Adil’s ATP, the other most popular blog is Teeth Maestro. I also read Chapati Mystery.

Yes, those two are good too. Teeth Maestro (http://teeth.com.pk/blog/) is run by a practicing dentist in Karachi I think. And Chapati Mystery is good too. Here’s a link from the website on Mughal paintings (http://www.chapatimystery.com/archives/holydays/holi_holi_hai.html). from 1625. Check out the picture of a drunk Jahangir being carried to his bed….
