Bill Gates Unplugged

Bill Gates made news when he playfully released a jar of mosquitoes a few days back at a conference in the US. The conference was TED 2009 and Gates was trying to make the audience of mainly rich people experience how it feels to be bitten by mosquitoes (he later clarified that the mosquitoes were uninfected!). As funny as that may be, Gates’ talk at TED (which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design) was pretty interesting. He dealt with two of the issues that are occupying him now–eradication of diseases, like malaria, which affect the poor, and improving standards of education and the quality of teachers. This video has the entire talk, including the release of the mosquitoes!

At TED 2009, Gates also did a much-talked about Q&A with Chris Anderson, TED’s curator, where he spoke about the world’s economic crisis and what needs to be done–a Gates’ prescription if you like. You can watch that interview here.  The TED, which has been around since 1984, also has a blog that’s worth reading.
